With wings still humming from her morning commute, this tiny feathered patron pulls up to her favorite nectar bar for a well-earned refreshment. Ignoring the long line of imaginary customers behind her, she samples the house specialty—Sweet Blossom Reserve—one sip at a time. Critics have called her a demanding customer, known to buzz the service staff if the feeder isn't topped off promptly. Today, however, she appears quite satisfied, proving once again that the best things in life come in tiny cups and unlimited refills.

The Tongue of Thunder.
Most people notice a hummingbird's wings, but few ever see its tongue. While perched on a branch, this tiny visitor briefly extended its tongue beyond its bill—a split-second behavior that is usually invisible to the human eye. Captured in three consecutive frames, this sequence reveals one of nature's hidden wonders. Sometimes the most remarkable moments happen when a hummingbird is simply sitting still. This happened so fast last evening, I was focused on the feeder when Andrea pointed out the hummingbird on a branch. I turned my camera and shot a burst of shots, 30 frames per second to capture this sequence.

"Let There Be Light"
Ricketts Glen is noted for all the waterfalls and that trail up one side of a mountain and down the other side and I find them beautiful and serene but scenes such as this, on the trail early in the morning with the sun illuminating the fog and mist are so inspiring to me. I captured this way back in 2010 and remains a favorite of mine and remains a good selling print and also a framed print. Click on the photo for a better view.

Tucked deep within the ancient forests of Ricketts Glen State Park, this quiet cascade winds its way through a tapestry of golden autumn foliage and weathered stone. The gentle rush of water over layered rock creates a peaceful rhythm, inviting hikers to pause and absorb the beauty hidden beyond the well-traveled path. Surrounded by towering hardwoods and the timeless character of the Glens Natural Area, scenes like this reveal why Ricketts Glen is considered one of Pennsylvania’s most treasured natural landscapes, renowned for its waterfalls, old-growth forests, and wild mountain streams.

David vs. Goliath: The Feeder Showdown
In the left corner, weighing in at several ounces and armed with a chisel-like beak, a determined Downy Woodpecker lays claim to the prized nectar fountain. In the right corner, hovering at warp speed and fueled by pure attitude, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird arrives to challenge the giant intruder.

The woodpecker appears completely unimpressed, while the hummingbird is busy calculating a high-speed aerial assault. What follows is a classic backyard remake of David vs. Goliath—except David has wings that beat 50 times per second, and Goliath is wondering why the tiny helicopter keeps buzzing his head.

No birds were harmed during the making of this standoff... although a few feathers may have been ruffled and a great deal of hummingbird pride was definitely on the line. 🐦⚔️🐦
