I love a good creek/crick and I really love it when the cows are not pooping in it. Many of us Wisconsinites used to play in country swim holes when we were kids, back when America's dairy farmers let their cows graze in the fields. Oh boy, what are your thoughts? Did you have a swim hole in a nearby crick?

The sky rumbled, low, long and menacing, sirens screaming for everyone to run, to get below—and yet the wind never made its debut, as if the storm itself were holding its breath. Then the sky broke open, and the rain pummeled down in a sudden downpour. When all the noise and rain had passed over, fog began to rise from the valleys as if sending smoke signals across the region (HEY we are all OK). Then as the sun began to set every color across the sky in one final, defiant blaze. What a glorious evening—beautiful because it dared to be violent. And grand because I have my camera in hand!

Most of the storms that pass over southwestern Wisconsin come from the south west AKA Iowa, so whenever drama is afoot I run off to face that direction to see them both coming and going. There's just something peaceful and simple about getting a glimpse into the past life of a Wisconsin farmer. If you've never read "The Land Remembers" by Ben Logan, I highly suggest it! It tells the story of what farming life was like 100 years ago in this area, from a young boy's perspective — from going to school in a one-room schoolhouse to growing up on a farm. I believe Ben grew up near the Mt. Zion/Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin area. Anyhow, it's a fantastic history lesson that's quite interesting.
