I don’t understand how anyone can stand in a place like this and see only dollar signs. It’s inhuman to me.
You may have heard that the Trump administration stripped national monument protections from nearly three million acres of Grand Staircase–Escalante and Bears Ears out in Utah, reducing each monument by roughly 90% (!!!) and leaving these breathtaking public lands far more vulnerable to mining, logging, roads, and other development.
It’s so incredibly backwards and warped to look at something *this* beautiful and otherworldly and gorgeous and ask only what can be extracted from it. Treating ancient landscapes, vital ecosystems, and lands sacred to Indigenous nations as little more than untapped inventory waiting to generate $$$.
These places aren’t empty and they’re not wasted simply because some corporation isn’t making money from them. They hold history, life, beauty, silence, memory, and stories far older than this administration. The location we shot this frame is one of the areas stripped from Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
It’s just devastating to watch greed shape the future of land that belongs to all of us. Some places deserve to remain whole simply because they are irreplaceable.
Our public lands should be protected, not carved apart and handed over for exploitation.
