Jacob W. Frank has explored America’s National Parks and public lands since childhood. Now, he has turned his love of nature and passion for photography into a career, working in and photographing notable parks, including Grand Teton, Glacier, Carlsbad Caverns, Denali, Arches, Canyonlands, Rocky Mountain, and—currently—Yellowstone.
Given his lifelong connection to these landscapes, it should come as no surprise that Frank is a passionate conservationist and advocate for their protection. In his spare time, he has explored 35 more National Parks and 72 additional sites managed by the National Park Service.
PARKLANDS is a stunning celebration of the natural world, captured with remarkable artistry and deep appreciation for nature. It is also one man’s visual memoir of a life rooted in the lands that have raised and sustained him. Though the text is limited to brief introductions, concise captions, and a few personal stories, the photographs speak volumes.
The book’s six sections—Geology, Water, Flora, Fauna, Dark Skies, and History—highlight sweeping vistas, powerful waterways, vibrant wildlife, luminous starscapes, and historical sites. Rather than focusing on individual parks, this approach emphasizes the features that make these places worth protecting.
In few words, PARKLANDS makes a compelling case for protecting America’s National Parks and public lands—an argument that feels especially timely amid debates over their future. Though some might skip the text in favor of the distractingly beautiful photographs, I recommend reading these sections for their eloquent explanation of how each element helps maintain the balance of a delicate ecosystem.
In short, PARKLANDS is a visually striking ode to the power, beauty, history, and ecological importance of America’s National Parks and public lands. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to better appreciate these extraordinary places—not only for their rugged natural beauty, but for all the reasons they’re worth protecting.
