Some of my favorite images are made by shooting through something — a curtain of tall grass, a fringe of leaves, the blur of a foreground stem. The in-focus subject becomes more precious when it is reached through layers.

The light I am always chasing is the light that comes through a petal, not the light that falls on one. There is a translucency — almost a glow — when the sun is low and behind the flower. You have to be patient with it. You have to be there early or late. But when it arrives, nothing else will do.
