A contrast to my previous post about confidence—in some situations, we can have falsely inflated levels of confidence.

Darwin recognized what is now known as the Dunning-Kruger effect (“Unskilled and Unaware of It,” 1999), a cognitive bias leading to people overestimate their competence in areas which they have low skill, ability, or knowledge. Due to a lack of metacognition (the ability to step back and objectively judge one’s performance), they lack the expertise to recognize quality work and cannot see their own mistakes. When you are new to a field, you don’t understand its complexities—you don’t know what you don’t know about the subject.

Interestingly, people with a high level of competence in an area often underestimate their skills. They assume that tasks which have become easy for them are also easy for everyone else (the false-consensus effect).

Enjoying some mini-carrot cakes with tea. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to use this mid-20th century turquoise platter that I found at a thrift store.

I’ve been reading about confidence as part of the BrainHealth project, an online research study that I’m participating in through the Center for Brain Health at UT Dallas. Researchers have found that confidence is all in the mind and can be improved by regularly setting small challenges for yourself—things that stretch your abilities (and scare you a little), but allow you to experience progressive successes (and occasional failures from which you can learn).

I enjoy trying historic recipes. This one is from Regula Ysewijn MBE ‘s excellent book, ‘The British Baking Book: The History of British Baking, Savory and Sweet’ and originally appeared in an 1854 baking book. They are flavored with nutmeg, ginger, and cloves and studded with currants, candied citrus peel, and slivered almonds. They are perfect with a cup of tea 🫖
