-A SIZZLER ON SUNAPEE-
Here’s another image from yesterday’s show stopping sunrise at Lake Sunapee. Before the sky transformed into soft pinks and purples, it was glowing with brilliant shades of orange that lit up the clouds. One of my favorite details is the unique cloud formation just left of center. It almost looks like one of the dock pilings is piercing right through it. If you’ve been following my photography for a while, you know I have a bit of an obsession with photographing docks, and this one instantly caught my eye. Add in the glass like water creating a perfect reflection, and it made for a morning I won’t forget.

-LOON ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE-
There was a beautiful touch of pink and purple over Lake Sunapee about 10 minutes before sunrise this morning. New Hampshire is home to five lighthouses in total. Three on Lake Sunapee and two along the coast. This is Loon Island Lighthouse, the oldest of the three on the lake, built in 1892. When I first arrived, the lighthouse beacon was still flashing, and I was hoping it would keep shining until the colors reached their peak. Unfortunately, it switched off about three minutes before I captured this image. Even without the light, the gentle ripples across the lake created a peaceful scene. To top it all off, a loon swam nearby while calling to one another one. One of my most favorite sounds! It seemed only fitting to photograph Loon Island Lighthouse with loons providing the soundtrack to the morning.

-WORTH THE WADE-
Well, we finally got a sunrise with some color that made the early alarm worth it! This has been the longest stretch all summer where I just haven’t been very impressed with the sunrise conditions, but this morning finally delivered. I was completely winging it, driving around to see where the clouds looked the most promising. Once I got into Meredith, I noticed the better clouds were to the south, so I decided to try my luck at Indian Island. When I arrived, I spotted a patch of lily pads about 20 feet from shore and knew they would make a great foreground. Off came the flip-flops, and I waded out until the water was just above my knees to get a wider perspective that included the reflections and more of the colorful sky.

I’m all set up and ready for the 93rd Annual New Hampshire League of Craftsmen’s Fair at Mount Sunapee. You’ll find me in Tent 6, Booth 619, from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM daily, August 1–9. If you’re heading to the fair, be sure to stop by and say hello! I’ll have a great selection of my latest photography on display. The fair is filled with incredibly talented artisans, so be sure to take your time exploring. There are so many amazing exhibitors showcasing beautiful handcrafted work. You’ll find everything from fine art and photography to jewelry, pottery, woodworking, fiber arts, and much more.

While I’m at the fair, my amazing wife will be holding down the fort at the gallery. So if you’re in the Meredith area, stop in, say hi, and check out everything we have on display there as well.

-TANNERY COVERED BRIDGE-
I haven’t photographed the Tannery Covered Bridge in Gilford, New Hampshire very often during the summer, so I decided it was time to change that. I started in my usual spot down by the river, using the rocks in the foreground to add a little extra depth and interest. As I made my way back up the bank, I spotted these colorful flowers. They were the perfect finishing touch, adding a cheerful pop of color against the lush green landscape and giving the scene that unmistakable summertime feel.

-LIGHTNING AT THE LAGO-
More rain at sunset last night and again for sunrise this morning. With all the thunder, it reminded me of a photo I captured a few years ago in Meredith, New Hampshire. I’ve tried to photograph lightning on several occasions, but this is the only time I’ve been successful. I was standing on the town docks just after the rain had ended, so I didn’t have to worry about my camera getting soaked. Looking north over Lago Restaurant, bolts of lightning lit up the sky while Lake Winnipesaukee remained incredibly calm. The still water even reflected one of the strikes, making it an unforgettable moment. I’m hoping the clouds cooperate again soon and give me another opportunity like this! I hope you enjoy!

-ABLAZE FROM FAY’S-
This morning was way too cloudy for my liking, so I figured I’d share a favorite from around this time last year instead. This photograph was captured at Fay’s Boat Yard in Gilford, New Hampshire. I’d been to this location several times before, but the weather never seemed to cooperate. On this particular morning, everything finally came together. The sky erupted with incredible color, and although the wind had started creating ripples across Smith Cove, it eventually calmed just enough for those beautiful reflections to appear. Looks like rain for the next few days but hopefully we’ll get a break in the clouds for a sunrise or sunset. I Hope you enjoy.

-THE SIMPLE THINGS-
This morning’s sunrise from Leavitt Beach in Meredith, New Hampshire, was so peaceful and beautiful! When I first arrived, I was a little bummed because I assumed the approaching afternoon rain would give us one of those vibrant, explosive sunrises. Unfortunately, those fiery colors never really developed. Instead of packing up, I decided to be patient and wait for the sun to peek over the Ossipee Mountain Range, and I’m glad I did. Lake Winnipesaukee was as calm as I’ve ever seen it, creating beautiful reflections of the scattered clouds above. Then, just as the sun cleared the mountains, it produced a perfect sunburst to top it all off. Mountains, trees, sand, sunshine, and a lake, honestly, what more could you ask for?
Maybe a cup of coffee, but that’s about it.

-SPINDLE SURPRISE-
I received a text from a friend the night before I took this photo asking if I wanted to go for an early morning boat ride on Lake Winnipesaukee. Umm… YES!!! We launched from Lake Winni Marine on Paugus Bay at zero dark thirty and made our way toward Spindle Point in Meredith, New Hampshire. The ride over was chilly with the wind cutting across the water, but as the sun began to rise, so did the temperature and I finally started to thaw out. It was one of those mornings that reminds you why it’s worth getting up before dawn. The lake was very peaceful, and as far as I could tell, we had it all to ourselves. I brought my tripod along, but for this shot I leaned over the edge of the boat and photographed it freehand, just inches above the water.

-TOWER HILL-
The view overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee as you drive down this hill between Weirs Beach and Laconia is one that never gets old. I’ve photographed this scene several times over the years, but this image remains my favorite. Everything came together that morning. The sun lined up perfectly with the yellow centerlines of the road, and the crystal clear sky was painted in a rich shade of orange. Just as the sun crested the mountains, I was lucky enough to capture a beautiful sunburst at its base, adding the perfect finishing touch. One of the things I enjoy most about this spot is how peaceful it is in the early morning hours. It’s a very different story during Bike Week! Looking down from this vantage point is always a pleasure, although I have to admit, watching people power-walk back up that hill makes me tired just thinking about it. I hope you enjoy!
