Under a sky crowded with stars, a bright moon shines over Sam and a clothesline filled with laundry. Night Line brings together several familiar motifs in my work: a loyal dog, a small country home, and an everyday chore transformed by the night.

My aunt Iola Broadway, we called her Aunt ’Ola, helped inspire the title of this painting. I can still hear her telling my grandmother how tired she was of eating chicken and that she was going to get her some fish.

My grandmother raised chickens, and she and Aunt ’Ola would take trips to Red Banks, Mississippi, to fish. That family memory is part of the story behind “She Had a Taste for Catfish.”

Did your family have a favorite place to fish? Let me know!

“She Had a Taste for Catfish,” 16"x20", original acrylic painting on archival paper, is available here:

There was a time when wash day meant clotheslines stretched across the yard, sheets moving in the breeze, and baskets of laundry carried outside to dry. Did your family hang clothes outside to dry? What do you remember about wash day? Let me know in the comments below.

“Wash Time,” 16"x20", original, acrylic on archival paper.

Look closely, and you'll see that the words underneath this little night sky haven't disappeared.

“The Other Starry Night” was painted directly onto a page from A Table!, published in the 1930s. Rather than covering the page completely, I let the original French text remain part of the painting. The printed words, aged paper, handwritten marks, and acrylic paint all share the same surface.

And somewhere among all those words and stars sits one very small cottage. If you can see yourself there under a blanket of twinkling stars, raise your hand!

“The Other Starry Night,” 8"×10", original, acrylic on antique book paper, is available here: https://nj-woods-shop-109835.square.site/product/the-other-starry-night/2PEMLZJMOHOVWO4ES5VHNXNY?cs=true&cst=custom
