AI is a very slippery slope for a photographer.

Photographer Ownership of AI-Modified Photographs
In the U.S., purely AI-generated images without substantial human creative input cannot be copyrighted — meaning a photographer who only uses AI to alter a photo without adding their own original expression may not own the resulting work www.canonoutsideofauto.ca+1. Copyright law requires human authorship for protection, and the U.S. Copyright Office has consistently held that machine-generated works alone fall outside copyright’s scope www.foley.com+1.

However, if the photographer meaningfully modifies or incorporates AI-generated elements into their original work, the resulting image may qualify for copyright protection. The key factor is the level of human creative direction, decision-making, and original expression added during the process www.canonoutsideofauto.ca+1. For example, if you use AI to change a photo’s composition, add your own subject matter, or make significant artistic choices, those human contributions can be protected.

Recent cases show that step-by-step edits or human authorship in the process can be enough to secure copyright. In one landmark 2025 case, an AI-generated image was granted protection because the creator demonstrated “sufficient human original authorship” through detailed edits, even though the base image was AI-generated The Phoblographer. This suggests that documenting your creative process — such as prompts, edits, and decisions — is important for asserting ownership.

Practical takeaways for photographers:

No automatic ownership: Just using AI to alter a photo doesn’t automatically give you copyright unless you add substantial human creative input.

Human authorship is key: The more you control the creative direction and original expression, the more likely you can claim ownership.

Document everything: Keep records of your work, edits, and decisions to support your claim if challenged.

Check platform terms: AI tools like Midjourney or DALL‑E have their own commercial use restrictions that may affect rights.

In short, if you only use AI to change a photo without adding your own original creative work, you may not own it. But if you integrate AI as a tool while maintaining substantial human authorship, you can still own and protect the resulting image under U.S. copyright law www.canonoutsideofauto.ca+3.

She is fierce in the very best way. There’s a certain kind of strength that doesn’t shout — it glows. She carries that kind of strength. She’s fighting cancer with courage and grace, and she wanted to celebrate this chapter with the people who lift her up.

Their session was full of laughter, warmth, and the kind of love you can feel from across the room. It was more than photos. It was a reminder of what matters most, and a promise of brighter days ahead.

Guess where I spent the afternoon.
Picking up ten baby opossums for pre‑release rehab and photographing new patients at the North Texas Wildlife Center — a place that quietly shoulders the work most people never see but every community depends on.

Here’s a sneak peek of one of today’s little fighters: a nine‑banded baby armadillo. At this age their shell is still soft, making them defenseless against predators until their shell hardens up. Every single animal at the center arrived because someone cared enough to call, transport, donate, or volunteer. Follow the center on FB for patient updates, center needs and FAQ's about keeping wildlife safe.

The rest of the photos will wait until the center decides which ones they want to share, but I can tell you this much: behind those doors are animals who would not be alive without this team.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make a real, local impact — this is it. Wildlife rehab runs on donations, supplies, and people willing to show up. These babies don’t get a second chance unless we give it to them.

Food costs have surged and intake has kept pace. Please consider a donation at https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/organization/ntxwildlife
