The Neptune Pool gets the attention, but the details around it tell the real story. Marble colonnades, carved stone, and statues quietly watching from the sidelines. Makes me wonder if the celebrities at Hearst’s legendary parties ever noticed her, or if she simply stood there in silence, outlasting every guest who passed through.

📸🐘Lucy the Elephant, built in 1881 by James V. Lafferty as a six-story real estate attraction to sell beachfront property. She was one of three elephant buildings Lafferty created, but the only one still standing today. During Prohibition, Lucy even operated as a tavern, quietly serving drinks inside her hollow frame. She’s survived storms, neglect, and near demolition before being restored and named a National Historic Landmark. Still standing in Margate, still doing exactly what she was built to do.

Spiral stairs like a lighthouse, wrapped in very old, restored wood that still carries every year of its history.

Built in 1881 as a real estate attraction, Lucy the Elephant later served as a hotel and even a Prohibition-era tavern.
