How many islands can you count in this panoramic view?
Drummond Island comes with an entourage of 53 outlying islands, and most of them are scattered across the water you’re looking at right now, between Sturgeon Bay and Potagannissing Bay.
The name Potagannissing comes from the Anishinaabe name Bootaagan-minising-wiikwed, meaning Bay by the Mill Island, and Mill Island is Drummond itself. That big horseshoe-shaped island in the middle of the frame is Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge. The horseshoe curls around a natural inner harbor, so it’s essentially an island that shelters its own little piece of the bay.
If you lost count, that’s kind of the point. Nobody’s keeping track of much out here, that’s what island time is for.
