A small but very important change to how I handle images of children. 🖤
With the recent legal conversations and rulings surrounding children, AI-generated imagery, digital likenesses, and the ways images of minors can be misused online, I feel like this is something worth addressing publicly.
As a photographer, I have always believed that photographing someone’s child does not automatically mean I have permission to put that child on the internet.
Long before these recent developments, I made the decision to implement permission-based sharing of minor children into my business practices.
And moving forward, I want to make that even more clear.
When you book with me, the parent or legal guardian gets the final say in whether their child is shared publicly. Period.
I currently offer three options (sample images below):
1. YES — You may share my child on social media.
You’re comfortable with your child’s image being used on my website and social media.
2. YES, BUT PLEASE PROTECT THEIR IDENTITY.
You may share the image, but their face should be covered with an emoji, blur, or other appropriate method.
3. ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Do not share my child on social media, your website, or other public-facing platforms.
And I want to make one thing extremely clear:
No parent will ever be judged, treated differently, or receive a different level of service because of the option they choose.
There is no “right” answer here.
Some parents are comfortable with their children’s photos being online. Some aren’t. Some are somewhere in the middle. All of those decisions deserve to be respected.
As a mother myself, I understand the concern.
Unfortunately, the world can be a pretty gross place. Photos that seem completely innocent to us can be saved, altered, manipulated, circulated, or used in ways we never intended. The growth of AI has made that concern even more real.
I can’t control what happens to an image once someone else gets their hands on it, but I can control how I handle the images entrusted to me.
That’s why consent matters.
If you are the parent or legal guardian, your wishes regarding your child’s image will be respected. If you tell me not to share them, I will not share them. If you ask me to cover their face, I will. If you give me permission to share, I will honor that permission as well.
This isn’t about fear-mongering, judging other parents, or telling anyone else how they should raise their children.
It’s simply about respecting parental boundaries and protecting the children entrusted to me as best I possibly can.
Your child is more than a photograph.
And their privacy matters. 🖤
