I’m still trying to make one collage card every day, and lately I’ve been leaving them until the end of the day when I’m tired. So color has become an easy place to start. Pick a color, pull some pages, and see where it goes.

This week I worked my way through red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet — trying to change up the shapes and composition along the way.

I’ve been making one collage card a day and I’m up to 16. Some days I start with a prompt — a color, a shape, a mood or a way of cutting the paper. Other days I just start pulling things out of my art books and see where it goes.

Happy 60th birthday to my big sister Jennifer D. Cobabe

She was my first roommate, and from the beginning I pretty much wanted to do whatever she was doing. She took a photography class, so I took a photography class. Then we took classes together and ended up starting a wedding photography business together.

She eventually went on to pursue a culinary career, but she has always been one of my biggest supporters — of me, my work, and whatever chapter I’m in.

And all these years later, we’re still finding things to do together, now it’s knitting! She has the biggest heart, shows up when I need her, and has been such an important part of my life.

People often ask where the flowers come from.

Everywhere, really.

Trader Joe’s, the neighborhood, the flower market, a bouquet from Mike.

These came from Trader Joe’s. I’ve always been drawn to the inside of peonies—the tangled stamens, the soft layers of petals, the hidden details that emerge as they open.

Thank you to everyone who came by, spent time with all of our work, shared conversations, and made the afternoon so memorable.

It was wonderful to see family and friends, meet new people, and spend a few hours talking about art. Mike poured wine, shared stories, and even sent a few bottles home with new owners.

A heartfelt thank you to Susan Springer Anderson Art and her family who hosted the event. Their warmth, generosity, and willingness to help made the whole afternoon feel easy and welcoming.

Last year I joined a critique group through Los Angeles Art Association. It began with 12 artists but quickly became a small but dedicated group of 5.

For the past year, we’ve been sharing work, giving feedback, and getting to know each other’s creative practices. When the official critique group wrapped up, we decided to keep going.

We’re now continuing as a new artist group called
5/twelfths, and we’re launching our first group show on Sunday, June 14.

A new encaustic portrait collage.

These collage portraits are something I work on quietly and very slowly. I’d been wanting to try encaustic with them for a long time, inspired in part by the ancient Fayum portraits.

Right before waxing this piece, I realized I had printed on the wrong paper surface entirely. The wax interacted with the image in unexpected ways, but I ended up liking some of what happened.

Still figuring this work out, which feels like part of the process.

I’ve been thinking lately about how much the art around us shapes the way we create.

The first photo feels tied to two of my mom’s paintings, including one I’ve lived with for most of my life. The second photo reminds me of a painting in my bathroom that I pass every day.

It’s kind of cool how certain colors, moods, and compositions can unknowingly stay with us.

Mike makes wine. I make collages.

Sometimes we get a chance to bring our creative worlds together, and our collabs are always really fun. This time, it’s the very last case of Mike’s very first wine. For this special case, I created 12 original collages, making each bottle an original piece. 

Different media, different processes, same creative passions. Seven of these bottles sold instantly, but these four, which happen to be my personal faves, are still available
