My name is Michael Simms. I'm a local photographer documenting daily life in my home town of Loveland, CO This page is dedicated to Loveland and its people.

I’m a photographer based in Loveland, Colorado, a beautiful little city with wonderful people. I wanted to focus a portion of my photography work to documenting everyday life in this city. My inspiration comes from Roy Stryker’s Farm Security Administration’s photographic project of the 1930s (link at bottom). When a photograph is taken and you see it for the first time, it’s current. e styles, architecture, vehicles, art, etc. Revisit that same image once it has begun to age and its meaning and significance have changed or grown. This photographic log will take a bit of time to build before the images begin to get that special shine of age. This past week I put a roll of film in my camera and spent the next three days exposing it making portraits in Downtown Loveland. I usually try to finish a roll of film in a single outing, but circumstances caused this roll to take a bit more time. The results were wonderfully Loveland.

I Love Loveland, and I think our little downtown is really taking shape!

Last night was the end of the FREE Wednesday Night Concerts provided by Downtown Loveland for this year. Clay Street Unit put on one helluvvashow. There was a good crowd on hand and not even a late thundershower could scare them off. I really enjoy the community feel I get when I go to these events. There are always such cool people to meet and talk with, which for last night held true.

Last night was an Awesome Wednesday Night Concert with The Animeros on the Foundry Stage. They are a really cool band. They had what I would describe as kind of a cool Latin sound, and everyone was really groovin’ to it. Their keyboard player was using a Vox Talkbox (at least that’s what I know them to be). That is a device where you put a tube in your mouth and you can manipulate the sound of the instrument and even kind of talk through it. I usually see that being used with a guitar, not a keyboard. It was So Cool! There was a nice crowd on hand, and I was able to meet and talk with a lot of different people. I made portraits of some of them.

Downtown Loveland has done such an excellent job putting on these concerts and getting such a wide range of artists. Next week is the final show and it’s gonna be another great one. Don’t Miss Out!

I attended the Sculpture in the Park event again this year and made some photographs. There were so many amazing works on display and it was hard to choose what I wanted to photograph. Though my selection is narrowed based on which ones I can photograph from down low. I try to fill the frame with sky in an effort to eliminate background distractions.

It has been a little while since I have done any photography in Downtown Loveland because I had been away traveling for the past 3 weeks. I thought what better way to get back into the swing of things than to head down to the Wednesday Night Concert. It was really great to get back into the community and make some portraits. Gasoline Lollipops were playing for the evening and there was a good turnout on hand. I met some really wonderful people, even a lady wearing three live snakes (Loveland is just so freaking COOL!) I started up on 4th Street and then made my way down to The Foundry. Even the weather cooperated with a break in the monstrous heat.

I photographed some of the construction on Block #4 using my Mamiya Super 23 6x9 Medium Format camera. It has the same ratio as my Nikon F2 35mm camera, but the negatives are so much larger and more detailed. I regret not having used it more downtown. I going to try and work it in for the remaining months.

Last Thursday I was in Downtown Loveland and noticed all the rebar baskets laid out on the eastbound lane of Block #4. I figured they would be pouring the slab on Friday, the next day. By the time I got down there at 8am they were well on their way, so I missed the start. I can’t believe they didn’t wait for me!🤪

The westbound lane should be getting poured tomorrow, finishing a good chunk of the concrete for the last block.

Yesterday Wendy Woo’s Girl Crush was the big kickoff show for the One Sweet Summer Wednesday Night Concert series put on by Downtown Loveland. It was the first of eight concerts that are being held at The Foundry this summer FOR FREE. Some much needed rain preceded the show which dropped temps and made it quite pleasant. It hit at just the right time to allow the place to dry out a bit before the show began. There was a great crowd on hand and Wendy Woo’s Girl Crush absolutely Crushed It! I met so many wonderful and interesting people and most of them allowed me to make their portraits.

If you haven’t been to one of the Wednesday Night Concert’s you should check it out and stop missing out. It is so much fun! In addition to the permanent eateries, they have tasty food trucks, ICE CREAM, and quenching beverages served up by local breweries. Plus, there’s a whole section setup over by the Police Station for the kiddos to play, so you can count on them being family-friendly shows. I always get a warm sense of community when I go to these events.

Yesterday I went to Downtown Loveland to see what was happening and had the good fortune to arrive as the Zak Dirt crew was pouring the Valley Pan for Block 4. Block 4 is one of the three blocks not to have side curbs, so the roadway slopes to the center on each side. The Valley Pan is where the storm drain grates are located. I was glad to have been able to photograph this procedure as it was the remaining concrete element I had yet to photograph while it was in process.

It has been fascinating to see how the makeover of 4th street has been done. With all the different services, utilities, complex concrete crosswalk and roadway elements, I’ve enjoyed seeing it all come together.

The demolished Block 4 roadway was one of the first the things I photographed when I began documenting the construction on film this past winter. Block 4 is the block with the most phases I have documented.

My photography project of our downtown construction will be getting donated to the Loveland Museum once completed.

I had a great time at the Red, White, & Brews at Loveland Aleworks event in Downtown Loveland for the 4th. They had a car show with some really nice rides, and I made some photographs of them. For entertainment they booked two bands and a solo guy playing acoustic. For eats they had some tasty food trucks. And of course, a good selection of BEER. I didn’t know anything about the bands that were going to play and I showed up when the first band was already playing on stage. It was two sisters and their dad. They were great and really rocked. Then there was a guy playing some acoustic guitar and singing on the parking lot stage. He was really good too. I had met him before at one of the Bluegrass Jams, nice dude. When he finished the second band took the main stage. I only got a handful of photographs of them because I ran out of film. The one time I leave the house without a spare roll, and it bites me. Doh!

The Big 250 is now In the Books. 🎆🇺🇸
