I haven’t been on here for a while. It’s not that I haven’t been shooting, it’s that I HAVE been shooting, working on the van and trying to survive this crazy time of high prices, work stress and uncertainty. This is just the reality of my life nowadays. I have also had some incredible opportunities in the past few months photographing Legends like Al Teague and “Big Daddy” Don Garlits. Follow my portrait account Scott Photo Co - Portraits by Tim Scott to see the final portraits in the next few weeks.
Speaking of Don Garlits, I was in Florida last week and got to spend some quality time photographing this legend(!!!). The full story of that will be coming on my Patreon (LINK IN BIO) as soon as I can get it together. I wouldn’t trade that opportunity for the world but unfortunately I missed the inaugural RPM/SCTA Dirt Drags this past weekend at El Mirage. It looked amazing. Anyone who knows me knows that El Mirage is one of my favorite places on earth and I will definitely be at the next one!
Since I don’t have any photographs from the RPM/SCTA event here are some from the Rolling Bones Circus shenanigans at El Mirage from a few years ago. Enjoy.

Two years ago today we lost the Legend that is Alex Xydias. I had the unbelievable honor to spend a few hours with him shortly before his passing as he allowed me to make a portrait of him in his 102nd year on earth. He was as vibrant as he was kind and his presence in front of my lens was honestly quite intimidating – not even remotely because he was an intimidating man, but because of the incredible life that he lived and the people that he deeply impacted in his lifetime.

My one sadness about this opportunity was that I was not able to share his portrait with him before he passed and he seemed so excited and engaged with the entire process. There are so many people with personal experiences and deep relationships with Mr. Xydias, so when it was time to put together some stories about the man he truly was I reached out to several people who knew him well and asked then to share some personal stories and photos of what made him such an amazing man. These are a couple of outtakes from a shoot for HopUp Magazine annual No. 16. This was quite a magical and unexpected shoot with many gifts from the El Mirage weather gods. Here’s an excerpt from the HopUp Magazine story: “The morning of the shoot Bill called me that maybe we should reschedules there had been no wind the night before (which is really unusual for El Mirage) and that the dirt and dust was just hanging in the air. I have to admit that this made me even more excited about the shoot. Odd and “bad” weather can make for really unique photographs and this unusual situation did not disappoint me at all. It was a one-in-a-million (sunrise) on the dry, dusty bed of the dry lake and as the sun came over the horizon it was truly magical”.

It’s 2017 and I am at Speed Week with the Rolling Bones Circus. I have schlepped my film cameras out to the salt flats in the attempt to capture the happenings and stories on the salt. While there are many stories this particular one was Bill chasing a record in the Rolling Bones built 532. It was a challenging few days with the heat, mechanical issues and not the best salt conditions but every time I saw Bill he had his trademark hand-rolled cigarette in hand and a smile on his face. While I don’t remember the final speeds from this adventure I sure as hell remember the lifetime friends I made. This car is now in the more than capable hands of caretaker Dustin Corl, reborn, fine-tuned and better than ever. More on this continuing story coming soon…

The second photo is the uncropped photograph as I shot it. As a larger print, this feels more like it did when I was standing there experiencing the moment. Not the best for small screens. 🤠

I am so blessed to have amazing opportunities come through my LEGENDS/passing project. On Saturday, May 30th I had the honor of being invited to the 85th birthday celebrating for Robert “Bones” Balogh. Bones and ISKY Iskenderian were very close friends and Norma Iskenderian, Ed’s daughter-in-law, very kindly arranged for me to set up a studio at the Lions Automobilia Museum before the celebration and make a portrait of Mr. Balogh.

2020 drag racing hall of fame inductee Bones Balogh has lived an amazing life and has the incredible stories to go along with that. It has been such a pleasure to be able to sit with some of these legends and just listen to stories of life and drag racing history. In 2019 The Rolling Bones were in SoCal for GNRS and sharing the new Dennis Varni build for the very first time. The car was delivered a day early to my home in Pomona (that’s a whole other story that I’ll share in the future on my Patreon page) and immediately following GNRS Ken had asked me to photograph the car at El Mirage for their next book, “The Book of GOW”. Unfortunately when we arrived at the edge of the dry lake bed it wasn’t so dry as it had rained a few days before so I had to quickly come up with alternatives. Even the road into El Mirage is quite recognizable so I decided to make some photos there. Just off the road there was a cool Joshua tree so I also made a few shots there. To wrap it up we drove up the back roads a bit and found a little empty dirt road and we made more photos there. These are a few of the photos from that day.
