Back in 2017, we had a total eclipse of the sun and I photographed it using my iPhone and some pretty lo-fi tech. This was taken at a viewing party on the lawn at Linfield University in McMinnville, Oregon. As I start to see people preparing for the upcoming total eclipse that will be visible in Spain, I wanted to share some tips with you, my dear followers! This image is known as the Diamond Ring effect that appears immediately before and immediately after totality. It is estimated to last only 10 or so seconds. Of course, never look at a solar eclipse without proper eye protection! I used a spotting scope, my iPhone and protective mylar to make this image. This is an ambrotype of the tabular iceberg A57a that I photographed in Antarctica in 2019. The iceberg originated from an ice shelf in the Weddell Sea in 2008 and at the time the photograph was made, the iceberg measured 11x5 nautical miles, making the berg roughly the size of Washington, D.C.
This image was completely unexpected - we had been sailing along the edge of the iceberg, marveling at it’s beauty and size, but the light was pretty flat. As we sailed away, the sky opened up a hole in the clouds and suddenly the berg was illuminated, making the scene more like a Rothko painting than an iceberg. This is another moment I will never forget - the gift of 30 seconds of direct light on the top of a tabular iceberg. In the ten years I spent in the polar regions, this was the only time this particular light happened. A true gift.

This video was made about a week after the chicks hatched. I was astonished by how intense the feeding appeared, with the mamma bird really getting her beak down into the chicks! At this point in the babies’ development they are blind and very tiny. I hope you enjoy this interesting moment. For more about this journey please have a look at my Instagram page. Happy Friday! Today is the first sign of the baby hummingbirds! There are 2 that I could see the mama feeding. I will follow along their tenuous journey to fledging.

One of my favorite ways to get some exercise is to walk in the woods. Yesterday, I came across a very well camouflaged Anna’s hummingbird sitting on her nest, right by the trail. I returned later with a 400mm prime lens so I could make some images without disturbing the bird. I am now going to watch to see if she has a successful brood, so follow along!
