Today marks the end of an era at Summit Video as we say goodbye to Karrie Smythia Wahlert. From film transfers and video editing to copywriting, social media, and caring for our customers, Karrie made a difference in so many ways. We are incredibly grateful and fortunate to have had her with us, and we’re even more grateful for the friendship she has shared along the way. Karrie, thank you for everything you’ve brought to Summit Video. Today we restored a remarkable piece of family history: an informal oral history interview recorded in September 1957 in Houston, Kentucky. In the recording, an elderly man reflects on his childhood growing up on a Kentucky farm, sharing memories of family life, education, work, and the rapidly changing world around him. Born on October 8, 1869, he recalls attending college briefly before leaving to support himself, earning just $20 a month working in a store.

What makes recordings like this so powerful is that they preserve far more than names and dates. They preserve personality, cadence, emotion, humor, and perspective…the kinds of details that disappear so easily with time. Listening to someone speak in their own voice about Civil War-era memories, Reconstruction politics, racial tensions in the South, farming life, and everyday experiences creates a direct connection to history that no textbook can fully replicate.

It’s also incredible to think about the foresight this family had in 1957 to document these stories using the best recording technology available to them at the time. Because they took the time to preserve these memories nearly 70 years ago, future generations can still sit down today and hear the voice of someone born just four years after the Civil War ended.

That’s the beauty of restoring old media! Every tape, reel, film, or photograph has the potential to reconnect families with stories and voices they thought were lost forever. If you could hear one voice from your past again today, who would it be?

Today in the studio, we’re restoring a remarkable collection of reel-to-reel audio letters recorded during the Vietnam War in 1970.

These tapes were exchanged between a USAF officer stationed overseas and his family back home in Leeton, MO. Each reel contains about 30 minutes of conversation: voices traveling across the world long before FaceTime, email, or even affordable long-distance phone calls.

On these recordings, you hear a wife and children sharing everyday life on the farm: updates about school, chores, weather, family happenings, and all the little moments missed while their husband and father was away at war. In return, he sends back pieces of his own life overseas, snapshots of service, distance, uncertainty, and love.

As we carefully clean, restore, and digitize these 56-year-old recordings, it becomes a deeply human experience. Many of the voices captured on these reels may no longer be with us, yet here they are again...laughing, storytelling, checking in, and simply being present with one another.

That’s the power of preservation.

At first glance, recordings like these may seem ordinary or mundane. But with time, the ordinary becomes priceless. These tapes preserve more than voices. They preserve personalities, relationships, emotions, and a moment in history exactly as it was lived.

“That’s how your family stayed connected during the war.”
“These were their hopes, worries, and everyday lives in 1970.”

There’s something incredibly moving about hearing the voices of people we love, exactly as they sounded decades ago.
