“We are so much more than a wig shop and I want people to know that.”

That was Amy Ames’ biggest frustration before our session. Through Grace & Grit Beyond Beauty she guides women through hair loss, one of the most vulnerable seasons of their lives. Her images did not show that.

So we planned images that felt like her: grounded, warm and quietly powerful.

Since then Amy has been featured in magazines, podcasts and radio interviews. People recognize her in public. A client’s family was so moved that they donated a digital billboard to share her work.

Her advice to every woman building a business: “You have built the business. Now show up in it. People want to see who they are buying from and feel connected to the person behind the brand.”

This fall I have been thinking about the hundreds of women who have trusted me with their stories over the past 9 plus years.

- The HR consultant who rounded out her image library.
- A business owner whose images finally showed she is so much more than a wig shop.
- A solopreneur who booked because she “had to for business” and found clarity and confidence along the way.

Each of them came in unsure of what to expect, unsure of what images they actually needed and unsure if this investment in their future was worthwhile.

Stepping into the unknown is okay. It starts with a conversation that clarifies the direction you are going and the images needed to bring attention to you and your message. You need a photographer who will ask the right questions and guides you every step of the way.

When Leslie came to me, she already had great branding photos. But something was missing.

Some images no longer fit, and there were gaps in what her website and social media needed.

So we sat down and looked at her image library together: what to replace, what to keep and what was still missing. Then we planned a session to round it out.

Being present is a gift like no other.

Being present meant sitting in the rain with my oldest grandson (4 1/2 years old).

Being present meant building rain tents, letting him sit in the puddle while he played out his stories with his favorite animals.

Being present meant exploring my photography studio with the eyes of a young child and discovering that the cylindrical tubes make great tunnels to hide in and give you the best smiles.

Being present is what I do best when I meet with my own clients so they can share their stories, hopes and fears. Getting photographed requires being present so that your story, your essence has a chance to flourish.

Being present is a core value in my business.
