"A rose is a rose is a rose ..."

This is a rather famous line of poetry from early 20th century writer, Gertrude Stein, in her 1913 poem "Sacred Emily". While it has been analyzed in many ways, Stein generally meant the phrase to serve as a reminder of a thing's fundamental identity: things are what they are, and do not need extra adjectives or symbolic baggage to justify their existence. By repeating the name, Stein intended to strip away traditional poetic clichés and force the reader to appreciate the noun simply for what it is. I am partial to metaphors myself but I appreciate the meaning here.

This is a very simple shot. Not sure why but I really like it. The off-kilter leaning line of the lamp, the stepping stones in the background. The flowers hinting at a bit of color. I don't know. Go figure.
