Believe it or not, this was during a maternity session. Yes, we’re celebrating the new little one—but this session is for them too. I love giving siblings just as much attention as the parents-to-be, making sure they feel special, important, and still the star in this season of change.

Somehow calm, suddenly glowing. Parents are often caught off guard, but this is what I love most about family sessions. How kids show up in ways that are so uniquely them… and sometimes, surprisingly tender.

Patterns can totally work in photos, but only if used thoughtfully. Too many bold prints and your images can start to feel more chaotic than cozy.

Here’s how to make patterns work for your session:
✔️ Choose just one person to wear a subtle, small-scale print
✔️ Pull the rest of your family’s colors from that pattern
✔️ Mix in solids and textured pieces to create a clean, balanced look

❌ Try to avoid multiple loud patterns, big graphics, or anything too visually busy. The goal is to let the emotion and connection stand out—not the clothes.

📸 Pro tip: Lay the outfits out on your bed or floor and snap a quick photo. If it looks cohesive and soft, you’re all set.

🎨 Let’s Talk Color: What Looks Best in Family Photos
Color plays a bigger role than you'd expect. The right tones can make your photos feel soft, cohesive, and timeless—while others can feel distracting or harsh.

✨ Colors that look beautiful on camera:
– Earthy neutrals (like cream, soft grey, camel)
– Dusty tones (sage green, muted pink, soft blue)
– Deep jewel tones (navy, burgundy, forest green)

🚫 Colors to avoid:
– Neon anything
– Bright red or highlighter yellow

These tones either reflect oddly on skin or pull attention away from faces—that’s the opposite of what we want!

📸 Quick trick: Lay everyone's outfits on the bed or floor and take a photo. Does it look calm and cohesive? You're on the right track.

📸 What to Wear for Family Photos (Start Here)
Not sure what to wear for your family session? You’re not alone! Outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos feel—whether it’s warm/timeless or chaotic/clashing.

But good news: it doesn’t have to be complicated.
This series will walk you through exactly what works on camera—from colors and textures to shoes and seasonal styling.

✨ Rule #1: Keep it simple
✔️ Soft, natural tones
✔️ Comfortable, well-fitting outfits
✔️ No logos, neon, or stiff fabrics

Start by trying on something you already love—your go-to dress, a favorite sweater, your best-fitting jeans. If it makes you feel good, that’s a great starting point. From there, you can build your family’s outfits around it using complementary tones and textures.

It’s been a minute since I’ve shared headshots! Recently, I got to photograph the Bellevue City Manager’s office staff, and they made my job super easy. Such a great group!

I closed out the year with some truly special newborn and family sessions – such a lovely way to wrap up an amazing year at Kiersten Marie Photo. To every family and individual who trusted me to capture them, thank you. Your support means everything to me, truly. This might sound cheesy (but isn’t that what the end of the year is for?) – it is the honor of my life to document your memories. Here’s to 2025, where I’ll keep creating, connecting, and maybe try to let go of a little perfectionism (thanks, adhd)!

I think places like Carkeek are just begging for big, cinematic shots. The (frightening) stairs let you get such unique angles, I just played and played. This maternity session was WARM but these two made it so fun to just sit back and document them in this phase. Can’t wait to share their newborn photos ♥️
