the OBX Beach Bum

the OBX Beach Bum Oh sure, there are plenty of beach bums on the OBX, but I'm the legendary OBXBeachBum. No kidding.

Roy Edlund is a prolific chronicler of life via photographic wonderment of the Outer Banks under the assumed name “the OBX Beach Bum.”

Last night we had a home invasion by a crazy female. Apparently I forgot to lock the front door.

We got up early to get ready for the Soundside Market and she attacked me as I entered the kitchen.

I started screaming, Sandie started screaming. I was flailing about like a crazy man.

She had these big green eyes. Funny the things you notice when the adrenaline kicks in and time stands still.

She hid behind the light in the kitchen and I ran to the bedroom to get something to defend myself.

I called out to Sandie to make sure she was okay and she had barricaded herself in the bathroom.

I re-entered the kitchen and she attacked again, I swung wildly in her direction and she backed off.

I swung again this time connecting so solidly, she left a mark on the ceiling. I can't believe I actually killed her. Sandie hugged and kissed her hero.

Yellow flies, right?

Talk about your wake up call. I've got enough adrenaline to fly to Nags Head.

Speaking of which, we'll be in Nags Head from 9am-1pm. Hope to see you there.

This market season has been a blur with only seven more in the upcoming weeks.

When I'm feeling overwhelmed, I'll take a short walk among the seaoats, listen to the wind, look out at the ocean.

Sometimes I'll do that with a photograph.

This morning I read a post by a friend of mine about how much the beach has changed and not for the better.

And as I read the comments I found myself nodding in agreement.

Then as I ruminated on it, thinking I might even comment myself, I decided my comment wouldn't add anything.

Life on the beach has changed and it's hard not to despair.

But I think my part is to show the splendor, to remind us of what we love about the Outer Banks and hopefully it softens hearts.

I just have to keep showing people the beach itself, at its best, so they keep loving it, because a place that enough people genuinely love is harder to turn into a portfolio than a place they've stopped seeing.

My part is to keep the affection alive.

That's a good part to have.

Love from here.

Most of the time, I sit at my computer working on any number of projects, completely oblivious of all the work my wife does to keep this whole thing afloat.

Yesterday, as her manservant, at days end, I was completely worn out, physically and mentally.

And then this morning, she's up and at it again. More shirts to dye.

So before sitting down to share a photo with you, I got the shirts ready for her, doing what I can to make her life easier.

I say all this to publicly shower her with accolades from me, to all the followers of this page because she is an amazing woman and I am beyond blessed to have her at my side.

I thought you should know.

Love from here.

I've been recruited, well, that's not the word actually, what did they call it when guys just standing around the docks were pressed into service on longboats?

Cause that's what it feels like, I was just standing around the kitchen watching my wife slice the bananas for my breakfast when the next thing I know, I'm hauling bins of recently dyed shirts to her rinsing area.

"You're going to be the hose guy." she said with a wry smile.

I carried the bins as ordered and am awaiting my next order hoping to finish my breakfast before my forced labor begins.

Shanghaied. That's the word.

But I am hoping to learn a new trade this week, tie dying shirts.

I do like the captain, so there is that.

Love from here.

Got a visit from the grandkids this morning, so things got a little hectic. Or is that chaotic? Tumultuous? Rampageous?

It's one of those words, but also so wonderful.

Seaoats are in full splendor mode, throw in a stairway to the beach and you've got yourself a photograph.

Love from here.

This is the photo I intended to share this morning before I left for the market at Dowdy Park.

Obviously I forgot, but i found it in my prints stack. Took a shot with the camera on my phone.

I called this sanderling Butch. It was an attitude thing. He was bullying anybody brave enough to sniff for sandfleas.

Come see us at Dowdy from 9-1pm
