There’s been some hullabaloo in the bookish community over an influencer who decided they were going to charge “small” authors $1,000 to read their book and make a video about it.

While I love the booktok/bookstagram community as a whole, this move ain’t it.

So if you’re an author (of any size), here are 5 things you can spend your money on to help get your work out there that don’t involve catering to entitlement.

And most of them don’t even have to cost $1,000.

1️⃣ Reserve a table at a book fair or other bookish event. It doesn’t have to be some grand market, lots of libraries host events for local authors that are MUCH cheaper and lower risk.

2️⃣ It’s just the truth these days that social media marketing is a necessity for building a brand. If you’re going to pay someone else to help with your online presence, why not hire a professional with a strategy?

3️⃣ If you’ve got a great story and want to take it to the next step then you definitely want it available in audio format. Find a great narrator and you’ll open doors to a whole new group of readers.

4️⃣ People can’t read books that you haven’t written yet. Maybe you need to focus on actually finishing the damn thing and take some time away to do just that.

5️⃣ You are putting SO MUCH effort into getting your work out there, but did you forget that you’re also putting yourSELF out there? Put your best self forward with professional photos that show that you’re serious about what you do.

I met Maria Shield 🏛️ at a signing event on Indie Bookstore Day at Smitten Booktique (having just bought her novel from Under the Cover Romance Bookshop literally an hour before). We got to talking about author photos (one of my favorite type of sessions) and she mentioned wanting to do some Renaissance Faire-themed author photos for promotion.

I was like girl say less and took her out to one of my favorite spots! She came dressed to the nines (matching her book cover perfectly, I might add) and we got some stunning golden hour shots.

Doesn’t she look like she just stepped right out of the faire??

I LOVE helping authors show off themselves and their work in a way that is true to them. So if you need author photos and you’re tired of the same old cookie cutter options, hit me up 😉
