HELLO, BEARS!

Every years, we come to Alaska to see our bear friends a couple of times. Currently, I’m back in Alaska for our “Fall” red salmon edition.

My time with the bears is easily one of my top three wildlife experiences anywhere in the world. There is something almost indescribable about being at eye level with one of the planet’s most powerful predators. And what makes it even better? These bears are remarkably tolerant of our presence. They simply go about their lives—fishing, splashing, playing and feeding—while allowing us a glimpse into their world. Most of the time, they barely even acknowledge us.

I can’t wait to see what the Alaska wilderness brings us today!

Would you guess these four photos were all taken in the same country? That’s Iceland. And having a person in the shot really helps show the scale of the landscape.

Turquoise water beneath towering basalt columns. A massive waterfall under a fiery sky. A fleeting rainbow appearing through the fog. And snow cave sculpted into shapes that hardly look real.

Iceland may be photographed a lot, but it never seems to run out of surprises. Do you have a favorite image of the bunch?

I’m back stateside after a successful solar eclipse adventure in Spain!

I didn't realize just how much the planning, decision-making, scouting, and constant pressure to find the best possible eclipse location for the group had been weighing on me until it was all over.

Last night, I had the strangest dream. I was stuck in a loop trying to find the perfect vantage point for the eclipse. For some unknown reason, the eclipse just kept going and going. After a while, people would ask, “Where do we go next?” So I’d rack my brain and find another spot. Then they’d ask again, and I’d find another. Eventually I was running out of good options and feeling the pressure all over again.

Needless to say, I was very happy to wake up and realize we had the perfect spot for the eclipse! And all the effort was worth it!

What a busy couple of months it has been!

Over the past two months, I’ve been chasing some of nature’s most dramatic displays—from the incredible monsoon storms of the Southwest to the unforgettable sunset total solar eclipse in Spain.

All I can say is—it has been an exciting ride!

How rare was this eclipse?

Total solar eclipses are rare enough. But having totality occur with the sun this low on the horizon with beautiful foregrounds—that combination is truly extraordinary! For another total solar eclipse whose path actually reaches the sunset horizon over land, we have to wait until 2030!

And yes, we will definitely be chasing totality again in 2027! Our photographic objectives will be different next year, but the experience should be incredible nonetheless. The August 2, 2027 eclipse will offer nearly three times the maximum duration of this year's eclipse!

This image was captured with a shorter lens Evelyn was managing. I especially love how the light from the lighthouse mirrors the incredible glow of the eclipsed Sun above it. Many more images are coming—including the 450mm shots!
What an experience. And we're already looking forward to the next one!
