That’s it. I won’t drive Teton Pass again until safeguards are in place.

Wednesday, another accident left one man dead and another seriously injured. This time, it was an F-250 hauling a trailer. The driver lost control coming down the pass and flipped into the ditch. The driver was life-flighted to Idaho Falls and is in serious condition. The passenger, Javier De Luna Chavez, 41, died when ejected from the vehicle.

This summer, there have been three major wrecks on Teton Pass as well as other close calls, all involving large, heavy vehicles within the same stretch of decent toward Jackson . The first incident was caused by brake failure of a dump truck, resulting in the death of two men, Nicholas Besobrasow, 66, and David Page, 57. The second crash, with an RV that lost control, left 5 people trapped, including an eleven year old girl in critical condition.

This latest fatal accident reenforces what we already knew: oversized vehicles descending the pass put lives in danger when drivers are unprepared, undertrained or choose to disregard safety protocol.

Please, friends, if you must commute over the pass, always wear your seatbelt, take your time and drive defensively. Your life is invaluable.

Studies have found that the coyote population in Yellowstone National Park has dropped 39 percent since wolves were reintroduced in 1995. Grand Teton National Park reported a 33 percent reduction in coyotes.

Last night, a two-vehicle accident on Teton Pass involving an RV and passenger car injured seven, including a juvenile occupant from the RV who was airlifted with serious injuries. A dog from one of the vehicles was initially missing but has been located.

This follows two other serious accidents on the pass: one of which left two dead and six injured and another involving an RV that lost its breaks and crashed at the bottom of the Pass. Accidents involved large vehicles (RVs and a dump truck).

Perhaps it’s time WYDOT considered additional safety measures related to overweight vehicles on the pass, including the hiring of more troopers to enforce fines.
