Meet the Clark family. Clark's Grebes, that is. Nesting among a larger population of Western Grebes in Southern California, raising their grebettes. The chicks ride, sleep, and eat upon their parents' backs, for their first few weeks until more tolerant of the cold water temperatures.

Hello again, this is Steve Comstock and this is day seven — the final day — displaying my interest in photographic art with .
For this final post, I wanted to share some of my photographic artwork and composites. These images begin as photographs, but gradually evolve through texture, layering, light, and creative interpretation into something closer to visual storytelling.
One of the things I enjoy most about photography is that the creative process does not end when the shutter closes. Sometimes an image continues to evolve long afterward into something more personal, atmospheric, or painterly.

Steve here, back with Day 6 photos with .
These images explore two creative techniques I’ve come to enjoy experimenting with: Multiple Exposure (ME) and Intentional Camera Movement (ICM).
Unlike traditional photography, where sharpness and precision are often the goal, these approaches encourage interpretation, motion, layering, and abstraction. The camera becomes less of a recording device and more of a creative brush.
I enjoy the unpredictability involved — each image becomes part photography, part experimentation, and part surprise.
Thankfully, Photo Club outings help to kindle interest with great technical expertise and group camaraderie.

Welcome to Day 5 of my Instagram takeover!

I never expected to be enamored of flowers, but here we are, getting to know macro photography!

Much of my photography involves waiting for wildlife or traveling in search of landscapes, but flower photography encourages a very different pace — slower, quieter, and more deliberate.
I enjoy exploring shape, color, texture, and light in close detail, often discovering compositions that might otherwise go unnoticed. Sometimes the smallest subjects (as you will see) can become the most rewarding creatively.
These images were captured using a combination of natural light and close-focus techniques that allow the details and textures to become part of the story.

Hello! Day 4 of sharing photos for OC South County Photo Club.
Taking a slight turn from wildlife toward landscape photography now. There are many great photographers who concentrate on a particular element, like landscape or portraiture, and achieve the pinnacle of their trade.
But, I truly enjoy exploring many different types of photography, which has an effect like one of my high school English teachers once said, “Steve, you’re spreading yourself too thin!”
Ok, but I’m having fun anyway, and here are some of the results of my wandering interests. Some of these are just pictures of “things,” and one is a cameo of my furry companion, Rosie, with the Mackinac Bridge in the background. Oh, and a short aurora video from October of 2024, consisting of (52) 3-second shots over Indian Lake.

Leisurely travel affords fun opportunities to feed one’s love of photography.
Expanded shooting locales today, ranging from places like Bolsa Chica on the west coast, Anza Borrego across the mountains, through Lake Pleasant in Phoenix, Bosque del Apache in New Mexico and east to Magee Marsh near Lake Erie. More from Michigan, including near my home at Indian Lake; a smattering of collective shots from these locations.

Day 2.5 of my of my collaboration with OC South County Photo Club.
I couldn’t help myself. I wanted to include some waterfall shots from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
These images are from Fall Falls trips from 2018 to 2025. This is just a tiny batch of the over 300 documented waterfalls in the U.P.
Probably the most well-known is Upper Tahquamenon, which looks like millions of gallons of root beer tumbling over at the rate of over 37,000 gallons a second! The color is caused by tannins leached into the water from trees and vegetation upstream. Others here include Bond Falls, Lower Tahquamenon, and Eagle River Falls.

On Day 2 we move north to Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the Spring.
Precisely way up north in the Keweenaw Peninsula to Copper Harbor and Brockway Mountain where the raptors are making their plans to cross Lake Superior on their migrating journey. This can be a real treat for photographers because the birds frequently fly straight at the camera at eye-level!
Big winners are Broad-wing, Sharp-shinned, and Rough-legged Hawks, Loons, Sandhill Cranes, Falcons of all varieties, Northern Harriers, and Bald Eagles. Even the occasional Golden Eagle!
And, we can't leave out those cute little Piping Plovers, nesting on the beach at Whitefish Point.

Hi! Steve Comstock here and welcome to Day 1 of a week of my photography for OC South County Photo Club.
Wildlife photography has become both a creative outlet and a way for me to slow down and observe the natural world more carefully. Much of my recent work focuses on birds behavior and fine-art wildlife imagery.
These images capture Western Grebes during Spring courtship behavior in those brief moments where timing, behavior, and composition all come together at once.
