Three hummingbirds. One flower. A tropical downpour.

The video starts with a Peruvian Racket-tail, then a Long-tailed Sylph joins it on the same flower. In the final moments, two Peruvian Racket-tails weave around each other, each trying to find the better feeding position.
Shot at 10-25% of real speed, the rain reveals details that disappear in real time.

The Marvelous Spatuletail Showing Off
The first visitor was an adult male putting on a display. A little later, two curious juveniles joined the scene, making for a fun sequence of interactions.

The Marvelous Spatuletail is found only in northern Peru, and watching these incredible hummingbirds in action was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

Early Morning with a Chestnut Antpitta

One of the rewards of getting out before sunrise.

This Chestnut Antpitta stopped by for an early morning feeding session and, between bites, broke into song. Moments like this are exactly why I don’t mind those painfully early alarm clocks.

The Marvelous Spatuletail is one of Peru’s most celebrated hummingbirds, and it’s not difficult to see why.

Perched in plain view, he goes through a series of display movements, swinging those extraordinary tail streamers with impressive precision. Most hummingbirds seem content with flying. This one appears to have hired a choreographer.

A Sparkling Violetear pauses long enough for a quick bath prepared for him by the gracious host of Ensifera Gardens.

What begins as a careful rinse quickly turns into rapid wing flicks and flying droplets, part of the daily maintenance routine that keeps hummingbird feathers in working order.

For something so small, the process is impressively energetic.

The Dodge 🪶⚔️

A Chestnut-breasted Coronet launches an aerial attack at a perched Violet-fronted Brilliant, but the Brilliant responds with one of the strangest defensive moves I’ve seen: hanging beneath the perch mid-attack to evade the strike.

For a moment, it looked less like a hummingbird and more like a tiny feathered acrobat suspended in the cloud forest air.
