Five Days. FIVE DAYS!!!

Four trips to Sandy Hook and one to Liberty State Park. Was it worth it? The heat, the unpredictable weather? The answer is YES! I would do it again if I could, but this was definitely a once in a lifetime type of situation. Iā€™m still culling through all of the photos I took. Here are two of my favorite ones from the evening of July 2nd. These images prove that sometimes the best things happen AFTER sunset. Enjoy!

Canadian wildfire smoke lingered over Raritan Bay Friday evening, casting a muted glow across the shoreline in South Amboy, New Jersey, as people enjoyed a summer night along the waterfront and on the water. These images begin with the Cornucopia Princess departing on an evening cruise as smoke from the Canadian wildfires softened the sunset.

I couldnā€™t resist sharing this boat one more time.

Yesterdayā€™s panning post included this shot, but I kept coming back to it. The patriotic paint scheme grabbed my attention first, but then I noticed all four people on board were wearing matching American flag shirts. At that point I had to laughā€”it looked like they had planned the perfect patriotic photo op just for me! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ˜„

(Boating edition!!!)

On Saturday I stopped by Manasquan after photographing a community paddle in Spring Lake. For about an hour, I sat along the inlet and watched as boats of all shapes and sizes zoomed past. It was the perfect opportunity to get some cool panning shots.

Hereā€™s what roughly 1/20th of a second, patience, and some cool looking boats gets!

Red Grant Regatta, hosted by Raritan Yacht Club

Beautiful light, an empty beach after the rain, and low tideā€”it couldnā€™t have worked out much better. The lower water level brought me a little closer to the action than usual as the annual Red Grant Regatta unfolded on Raritan Bay.

Itā€™s days like these that remind me why I love photographing New Jerseyā€™s coastal communities. You never know what a change in the weather might bring.

Yesterday I learned about a really cool local event in Spring Lakeā€”the Uncle Sam Patriotic Paddle.

What started a few years ago has become a unique way for paddleboarders to celebrate Independence Day. Participants gather on the lake in Divine Park dressed in patriotic attire while raising money for charity. This year, the event benefited Blue Dot Community.

It was a fun event to photograph and really captured the charm of this beautiful seaside community. I love discovering local events like this that tell the story of a place and the people who call it home. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ“ø

I was at Liberty State Park hoping to photograph the tall ships and naval vessels passing by when this boat caught my attention.

I started taking photos because I thought it was a beautiful boat. While I was photographing it, I noticed the two little girls standing at the stern by the American flag and thought the moment was so precious.

It wasnā€™t until I got home and looked through the images that I realized there were more children on board. Suddenly, what I had thought was simply a photograph of a boat became something much moreā€”the three children looking through the canvas opening as if they were looking out a window, the expressions of the other children on board, and all of the little details I hadnā€™t noticed in the moment.

Sometimes the best photographs arenā€™t the ones you plan. Theyā€™re the ones that reveal a little more each time you look at them.

Captures Over Coffeeā€¦ at night! ā˜•šŸŒ™

Today did not disappoint!

I headed back to Liberty State Park hoping to photograph four of the five sister ships as they departed for the Five Sisters Cup, racing to Boston for the next Sail4th event. Unfortunately, my timing was offā€”they began leaving earlier than the published schedule.

I ran to one spotā€¦ they werenā€™t there. I ran to anotherā€¦ they were back where Iā€™d just been!

Fortunately, I decided to stick around. After a little internet searching, I discovered that the remaining shipsā€”both the tall ships and the naval vesselsā€”would be departing around noon.
What an incredible experience! It was the ā€œunparadingā€ of the fleet, with virtually no crowds, perfect weather, and an entirely different perspective than the busy arrival days.

Sometimes you just get lucky.

And rememberā€”thereā€™s always a before and an after to events like these. What goes in has to come out! šŸ˜‚
