Last Thursday was my birthday and I returned to the Guatemalan restaurant, Cafe Antigua, on Classen Boulevard in Oklahoma City. I had an omelette with some shredded beef, potatoes, and black refried beans. I also ordered the fried plantains. If you haven’t been you need to try it. Afterwards I headed back downtown and did a little exploring in the Myriad Botanical Gardens, I didn’t go inside just walked around the park. In the evening my cousins took me out for dinner, I chose a Peruvian restaurant, Naylamp Peruvian Restaurant South, on SW 44th Street and S Pennsylvania Avenue. I had the Seco de Carne, a cilantro beef stew with beans, white rice, and a criolla salad. Absolutely flavorful! Except I didn’t get a photo of that meal, I was too busy stuffing my face.

Si no has ido, tienes que probarlo.

Last Wednesday I was in Oklahoma City, I needed a getaway so bad. That morning the thunder clouds were teasing me and only let down a few drizzles. I found this Guatemalan restaurant while I was out there, Cafe Antigua on Classen Boulevard, I ate there pretty much all week, it was amazing! This was the Spicy Motuleńo, the flan, and I believe a Cobán latte. Afterwards I went and got a few shots of downtown from the Mat Hoffman Skatepark. I drove down the road a bit and went back to the Scissortail Splash Park to check out the Scissortail bridge. That afternoon I was thinking about hiking, then decided to go and the last minute. I haven’t really paid too much attention to the time of the sunset and didn’t realize how much earlier the sun has been setting. I wanted to hike the Clear Bay Trail at Thunderbird State Park at the South San. I arrived and the sun was right over the horizon already, there was no way I was going to get to the destination I chose in time and it was getting dark quick. I decided to turn back and get to the fishing pier as quickly as possible to catch the rest of the sunset.

So I decided kind of last minute to take a week off and go hang out with my cousins in Oklahoma City for my birthday week. Our first outing was downtown at the Scissortail Splash Park. I couldn’t believe how humid the summers are in OKC, I literally could not stop sweating the entire week. Rolling hills and lakes all over.

I made it back out to Caprock Canyons State Park the Saturday before last. I really wanted to capture some of the views I didn’t get to last time. This time I took the Upper South Prong Trail to the side of the cliff and back to the trailhead. I didn’t take the trail all the way up to the ridge this time, although I did figure out the correct way up and down this time. There were two buffalo I saw at the beginning of the trail, they looked so exhausted, panting in the heat.

Another adventure at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas Panhandle, this was the Friday before last. I started on the side of the road on the intersection of the Juniper Cliffside Trail and the Sunflower Trail. I took the Juniper Cliffside trail, went on a little side adventure, then cut through the Juniper Campground and connected back to Sunflower Trail for a small loop. I always love hearing everyone’s stories about their younger days in the canyon. Never stop adventuring folks!

Every once in a while I make it out to Caprock Canyons State Park in Quitaque, TX. This last Saturday I decided to go hike one of the hardest trails out there and in this heat, yikes! I parked at the Upper South Prong Trailhead, hiked to the Lower Prong Trailhead, then took a left up to Haynes Ridge, all along the ridge, and came back down through the South Prong Trail to my truck. I checked the weather and it stated it was going to be a little cloudy. As I neared the drop down to the canyon floor I noticed thick clouds along the horizon, by the time I reached the drop off it was to dark to take some clear photos of one of the best views of the trail. After I figured out my way down, I forgot how steep this part of the trail was, I was pretty bummed about running out of sunlight. Right before reaching the creek my calves started cramping and I had to stop for a quick stretch, the last quarter mile I had to use a flashlight because I literally couldn’t see the trail. There was a crack in the ground I almost fell in towards the end of the trail. I definitely want to get back out there as soon as possible to capture some of those views of that crazy section during a clear sunset.

I made it back out to Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas Panhandle this past Saturday. It was brutally hot that day and I decided on hiking the Givens, Spicer, Lowry Trail to the giant Hoodoo and back.

Texas Panhandle back roads. I took these off the side of the road on FM 1057 right outside of Summerfield, TX and the grain towers were right outside of Hereford, TX on what used to be referred to as Holly Sugar Road. A few abandoned buildings, looks like the tree fell on top of the house. I was mesmerized by the rays of the sun shining through the clouds behind the towers that cloudy evening. I was really hoping for some rain to pour down so I could have some storm cells to photograph in the sunset. I had just returned from Clovis, NM where it had just poured, thunder clouds and storm cells all around, all I could do was just drive away. One of my favorite things though is hiking in the rain. I really haven’t had the chance here in the Texas Panhandle but when I lived in Phoenix and El Paso, there so many adventures had hiking in the mountains during a downpour. I miss it so much! For now, I’ll just keep sharing what I can of the Texas Panhandle, stay hydrated folks that Texas heat is not friendly! 🤙🏾

I usually keep my eye on the weather and check the canyon page for trail updates, when I left my house for Palo Duro Canyon State Park the Sunday before last it was clearing up and I noticed a storm system going over the canyon, Google weather stated it would be clear by seven o’clock. There were small storm cells all around on the drive to Canyon, TX. I stopped just in time to grab a sandwich at Honey Buzz Winery before they closed. By the time I arrived at the canyon it was just beginning to clear up and the last rain drops were trickling down. I initially wanted to hike Givens, Spicer, Lowry Trail but it was already closed. I hadn’t realized how much rain had come down in the canyon. I drove around the canyon to see if any trails remained open and then I found this cool little trail that led me straight to the chocolate river. I was thankful some of the trails remained open towards the backcountry so I decided to hike the Juniper Cliffside Trail. I got a little sidetracked and decided to cut through the Juniper Campground and connect to the Juniper Riverside Trail to catch the sunset from one of my favorite viewpoints along the trail.

The Saturday before last I was back out at Lake Meredith in the Texas Panhandle. I’ve been down this road several times now and there’s different viewpoints it takes you to of the lake, down Bugbee Cove and over towards the direction of the dam. This time I went all the way down to the furthest point and spotted this little island at the end of the cliff.
