Dive Medicine for First Responder Symposium

Middle River Volunteer Fire & Rescue hosted a Dive Medicine Symposium for EMS providers and dive teams throughout the region. The symposium was convened by leading regional physicians and recognized experts in the fields of diving and hyperbaric medicine.
The day began with didactic sessions focused on the recognition and management of dive-related emergencies, including assessment of the injured diver, clinical decision-making, and pre-hospital medical management. The afternoon transitioned to hands-on, scenario-based training, providing participants with the opportunity to apply these principles in realistic operational environments.

Participants engaged in simulated dive emergencies in the waters of Wilson Point, focusing on diver extrication, initial assessment, stabilization, and delivery of appropriate pre-hospital care. The combination of physician-led instruction and practical field scenarios provided EMS and dive teams with an integrated approach to the assessment and management of diving emergencies.

Today, the Maryland Helicopter Aquatic Response Team and partners gathered to conduct a regional joint training involving high-risk aerial extractions at the T. Howard Duckett Dam.

Trooper 2, an AW-139 from the Maryland State Police - Aviation Command and a UH-60 (Raven 90) from the Maryland National Guard provided the platforms for the hoisting operations. During the hoist operations the aircrew locates the target, the hoist operator lowers the rescuer to the location from a hover. The rescuer then secures the patient and then the aircrew lifts the rescuer and patient to the aircraft. The aircraft then transitions to forward flight and delivers the patient to EMS crews on the ground at the LZ.

The Maryland Helicopter Aquatic Response Team is a joint rescue unit combining the Maryland National Guard (29th Combat Aviation Brigade), the Maryland State Police Aviation Command, and the Baltimore County Police Department with credentialed civilian swift-water technicians from Baltimore, Harford, Howard and Montgomery county fire departments. The team trains year-round and has responded to numerous high profile incidents. They provided search and rescue at the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse as well as deploying to North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

From growing up with an Army Aviation father and spending many years in the Maryland Army National Guard’s aviation branch to now photographing such amazing people and aircraft.
