I realized today that Iā€™ve never really shared the meaning behind the name Sonder.

Sonder is the realization that every person around you has a life as vivid, complex, and unique as your own.

This morning, I found a mourning dove with a broken leg in my front yard and ended up driving it to a wildlife rehabber nearby.

As I drove, I looked over at this little bird sitting in a plastic planter in my passenger seat and thought how silly it was that this was how my morning had started. Then I looked at the car in front of me and wonderedā€¦ where are they going? How many people do we pass every day who are on their own unique journey? Maybe theyā€™re taking a rescued bird to rehab. Maybe theyā€™re heading to a job interview, visiting a loved one, celebrating, grieving, or simply trying to make it through the day.

Thatā€™s why Iā€™ve always loved the word Sonder. Itā€™s a reminder that everyone has a unique story.

And thatā€™s exactly why I love photography.

Photography is storytelling. Itā€™s preserving the moments that become someoneā€™s story, big or small. Every photograph is a reminder that every life is worth remembering.

Thatā€™s what Sonder means to me.
