This is a very special owl. It is called a Blakiston’s Fish Owl. It is the largest owl in the world and also one of the rarest. It is found only in Hokkaido, Japan; the Russian far East; and parts of China. It is believed that only about 150 Blakiston’s Fish Owls are in Japan, and the world population of this extraordinary owl is only about 1,000-1,500 owls. They nest in cavernous trees and inhabit wetlands, marshes, coastal forests and they especially like areas with coastal streams and forests. That’s where I took these photos, at a very special blind where conservationists stock the stream. And of Japan’s entire population of 150 about 25 have come from this stream alone! Incredible support for this extremely fragile species.

Thank you Japan for being so beautiful.
Thank you Canon for making such a wonderful lens— the 70-200 f/2.8. I think this focal length is perhaps the most useful / important lens for a landscape photographer, especially one who hangs out in the mountains or by the sea. The availability, quality, and size of this lens alone was a major reason for me to sell my GFX medium format kit. If you are a landscape photographer and your camera maker of choice has this focal length, I highly recommend adding it to your quiver. And yes, I think the 2.8 is worth it for waves or ravens alone.

Kita kitsune, aka red fox, on the move on a northern shore. These are the survivors of Hokkaido. You are as likely to find them in the fishing villages as you are in the forests or mountains. I love to see them anywhere but am especially fond of photographing them with them with sea nearby. 🦊🌊

You know it’s a good spot when you when walk back to the car to get another camera and lens. And then do it again to grab an ND filter when you notice the waterfall! Pulled up to this location for a bathroom break. Stayed for the photography. Mamiya images need to be developed so here’s one from the Canon.

I structure my Fall in Love with Hokkaido Photo Tour like a road-trip. We start in the west at my base in Otaru and finish up on the eastern most part of the island, Rausu. Along the way we talk photography, editing, business models, culture, and all kinds of other topics related and non related. In between conversations and coffee we work sunrise to sundown, looking for those scenes and critters that Move us. Over the next few days I’ll share more photos like this one from my most recent tour. Follow for more Hokkaido Love and if you would like to join me and a small group of photographers next year, please get in touch.

Today I went into Sapporo and look what I found! The last box of VELVIA 50 film! Five rolls, good until August 2027. Must use each frame wisely 😉 Precious 💍✨
