BORN IN FILM, LIVING DIGITAL 🎞️

After nearly 40 years of being around photography, I’ve noticed something about the process of making a portrait.

The moment someone steps in front of a camera, something changes. There’s an awareness, a subtle performance, a natural response to being seen.

I’ve learned to embrace that rather than work around it.

Portraiture is an interesting balance between being a documentarian and a director. Observing what naturally unfolds while offering just enough direction to shape the moment.

Light, surroundings, body language, and human connection all play a part. The artistry is in how these elements come together, often somewhere between intention and instinct.

STEPPING INTO THE EXTRAORDINARY 🎭

This Friday marks my fourth year as a sponsor and creative collaborator of Queen’s Labyrinth, an immersive Halloween experience brought to life through the wildly imaginative minds at Blue Gardenia Events.

I’ve never been the biggest Halloween costume person, but there’s something about being immersed in a world of theatrical extravagance, fantasy, and unapologetic creativity that has completely captivated me. Behind the camera, I get to disappear beneath my own creative cloak, experiment without boundaries, and make photographs that live somewhere between reality and imagination.

What makes Queen’s Labyrinth especially meaningful to me is that in 2024, it became the official launch of Portrait Lounge.

Portrait Lounge was born from a desire to create, not a business plan. It was meant to be a creative playground where I could continue exploring, refining, and challenging my understanding of studio and cinematic lighting. A space to experiment, take risks, and make something extraordinary simply for the joy of making art.

Over these four years, we’ve built worlds beyond the ordinary, created some unforgettable photographs, and, most importantly, shared the experience with an incredible community of artists and creatives.

And perhaps that’s been the greatest gift of all.

Creating art brings me joy. Sharing that creativity, exchanging ideas, teaching, learning, and watching others bring their own imagination to life brings me even more.

I’m incredibly grateful to Blue Gardenia Events for inviting me to be part of that vision year after year.

Here’s a look back at a few of my favorite images from our adventures through the Labyrinth. And here’s to another year of beautiful madness.

See you Friday, October 23. 🖤

There’s a camera I bring to weddings that means more to me than simply shooting film.

It’s a Zenza Bronica medium-format camera that belonged to my dad. Beginning in the 1970s, he used these cameras to photograph hundreds of weddings, documenting families and preserving memories long before I understood that I would one day follow the same path.

My own relationship with these cameras started when I was around 12 years old and began going to weddings with him. One of the first things he taught me was how to load the interchangeable film backs. Back then, a roll of 120 film gave him 15 frames, while 220 gave him 30. I quickly learned to listen for every click of his shutter and quietly keep count. My job was to have the next film back loaded and ready before he even realized he was about to need it.

Looking back, I love that some of my earliest lessons in photography had nothing to do with taking a picture. They were about paying attention, anticipating what was needed and being prepared before the moment arrived. In many ways, those lessons still influence the way I photograph weddings today.

My dad continued photographing weddings on film until the early 2000s, when digital photography began taking over the industry. Like so many photographers of his generation, he was pushed toward a new technology and a completely new way of working. The film cameras were eventually packed away, and along with them were boxes of film he had purchased in the late ’90s but never had the opportunity to use.

Years later, those cameras—and that film—found their way to me.

Today, I bring his Bronica with me to photograph my own clients’ weddings.

I think often about what these cameras have witnessed. Hundreds of wedding days. Generations of families. Parents, grandparents, children, first dances, nervous moments, celebrations and people who may now exist only through the photographs he made.

There are decades of family history connected to something I now hold in my own hands.

And there’s something wonderfully ironic about where photography has taken us. My dad was essentially forced to leave film behind as the industry moved toward digital. Now, more than twenty years later, we find ourselves drawn back to the texture, imperfection, anticipation and nostalgia that made film so special in the first place.

I’ve even inherited those boxes of expired film he never got to shoot. Every once in a while, I load a roll into one of his cameras and give that film the opportunity to finally make the photographs it was intended to make all those years ago.

For me, shooting film at a wedding isn’t about following a trend. It’s something much more personal.

When I photograph your wedding with my dad’s camera, I’m continuing a story that began decades ago. The same cameras I once stood beside him loading as a 12-year-old are now in my hands, documenting another generation of families.

There’s something incredibly humbling about that.

A camera that spent decades preserving other families’ histories is still doing exactly what it was made to do.

And every time I pick it up, I get to share a small piece of my family’s history while preserving yours.
