*I realize this story is propaganda, directed at the spouses and children of (mostly) men, to lure non-hunters to hunting camps: any excuse to enable a few more daybreaks in the blind or the stand. I have been the recipient of such a campaign by my brother, Ryan He loves his camp so much that he’d drive three hours for a morning of dove hunting.
 
I spent two sunrises with my dad in a blind in the Rigolets in high school. The Rigolets is an 8-mile-long deepwater tidal strait in Louisiana. “Rigolets” originates from the French word “rigole,” meaning “trench” or “gutter.”  
 
Oui. More propaganda. In the words of my 9-year-old niece after her first trip to a deer stand with her dad, “Well, that’s something I never have to do again.”
 
And while I prefer my camera, to stalk the precise moment a ray of sunlight transforms the ordinary into the mystical,  I understand the thrill of the hunt. Happy Holidays!

The Mrs. Ory Patout House for

February/March New Orleans Issue

“Years ago, Patout uncovered a swatch of faded wallpaper in an abandoned manor house in neighboring St. Mary Parish. He sent it off to the experts at Adelphi Paper Hangings in New York, who concluded that it was an 1830s French design. The company re-created the print by hand and now sells it in four colors under the name Florence Place Foliate.”
