A little senior. A little spooky. And a whole lot of Cameron. 🖤🎃

Cameron has been putting in the work in and out of the gym, and this senior session was the perfect opportunity to capture that side of him. But if you know Cameron, you know there’s another side that deserves a little time in the spotlight, too.

For the last EIGHT years, Cameron has been Michael Myers for Halloween. Eight years! 🔪 In our little corner of the world, he’s become the Michael Myers. The costume people recognize, the character people expect, and a Halloween tradition that has become part of who he is.

So, of course, we had to bring a little horror into his senior portraits.

From the gym to the golden fall leaves to a few slightly more chilling portraits in the woods, this session was all about celebrating the different sides of Cameron and the things that make him who he is.

Because your senior portraits should look like you — your interests, your personality, your story. Even if your story happens to include a certain masked horror icon. 😉

Cameron, I think we found the perfect mix of senior and spooky. 🖤

I've been wanting to share these for a while. 😂

The behind-the-scenes. The bloopers. The *this was not exactly the portrait I had in mind* moments.

And naturally, my own son has some of the best ones.

Theo has a very particular talent for producing the most pitiful cry face you've ever seen. Sometimes it's because he's run out of crackers. Sometimes it's because I've put him in overalls, which he considers a personal offense. And sometimes, it's simply because he hates having his picture taken.

I'm still not entirely sure which he dislikes more: the overalls or the camera.

The truth is, every session has bloopers. Every session has ups and downs. And when you're working with little kids, things don't always go according to plan. They're allowed to have opinions, big feelings, and days when they're just not feeling it.

These might not be the portraits I set out to create that day, but honestly? As his mom, I love that I have them.

Not every photograph has to be perfect to be worth keeping. Sometimes the outtakes end up telling the best stories. 🤍

The best part? I showed Theo this post and the pictures before sharing them. He looked at them, laughed, and said, “That’s silly.” 😂

And honestly, someday I hope we look back at these together and laugh all over again.

“What are some of your favorite outtakes or unexpected moments from your own family photos? I have a feeling I'm not the only one with a collection like this. 😂”

“No children were harmed in the making of these portraits. One may have suffered from insufficient snacks.”

Some clients become so much more than clients. ❤️

I met Josefina at church shortly after her daughter was born, and from the very beginning, she and her family welcomed me in. While I was away at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara for college, they became my family away from home. I will always be grateful for the way they made me feel like I belonged, and for the gift of knowing and loving their entire family all these years later.

And today, Josefina is running the Chicago Marathon! 🏃🏽‍♀️

I tell you, my friends and clients do the most amazing things, and it is such a privilege to get to cheer them on in all the big (and small) things life brings their way.

Josefina, we’re cheering you on from afar today! I hope you feel all the love and encouragement carrying you through those 26.2 miles. I can’t wait to see you next month and give you a big hug!

Go, Josefina! ❤️

Christmas at the studio this year. 🎄

I finally got my own boys in front of the camera in the Grand Stair Hall, and I think I may have officially fallen in love with this set.

There’s something about photographing your own children in a space you’ve spent weeks creating that makes you see it a little differently. It suddenly feels less like a set and more like Christmas.

And of course, we had to let Jack-Jack join in for a few pictures, too. Because apparently he needed his Christmas portrait. 😂

The boys are getting big enough that getting them to cooperate for photos now requires a little bribery, but I'm pretty sure that's part of the tradition at this point.

This year’s Christmas Experience includes two completely different Christmas settings here at the studio — the Grand Stair Hall and the Scandinavian Portrait Room — each designed to feel beautiful, timeless, and a little bit magical.

And after looking at these pictures of my own boys, I'm even more excited to photograph your families here this year.

Christmas Experience sessions are coming up soon. 🎄

Seven years ago today we lost our Thomas.

Last year I started awarding Passion Project sessions as a way to honor my brother in law and help others preserve their family in a lasting, meaningful way.

If you know someone you’d like to nominate to be a Passion Project recipient, click the link below and submit your nomination there.

I know all too well the importance of capturing those we love.

Untamed. Romantic. A little bit fearless.

She was never meant to disappear into the crowd.

The Wild bride finds beauty in the unexpected — wind in her veil, open skies, wild horses, and a little grit beneath the glamour. Couture meets the American West in a story that feels equal parts fashion editorial and vintage cinema.

For the bride who would rather follow her own path than take the expected one.

There are people from our childhood who become part of our story in ways we don’t fully understand until we’re much older.

Katie was one of those people for me.

She was my high school PE and aerobics teacher, and when I was growing up, I struggled with my weight and with a lot more than people could see from the outside.

But Katie saw me.

She saw how hard I worked. She saw how much effort I put in. She saw how badly I wanted to be better, even when I felt so stuck.

And she was kind to me.

I don’t think I understood then how much that mattered. But I remember it.

There is another thread connecting our families, too. Katie’s husband worked for my grandfather when they were newly married. Over the years, Katie would tell me stories about my grandfather and the ways he had shown up for their young family. She once told me he was the first person to visit them in the hospital after they had their first child.

Those stories always meant something to me. My grandfather was a very hard, calloused man, and knowing that there were people who experienced his kindness and remembered him fondly gave me another little piece of him to hold onto.

When I moved back to Kansas and was rebuilding my photography business, I spent some time substitute teaching and would cover for Katie whenever I could. She was—and truly still is—one of my favorite teachers and one of my favorite people.

So getting to photograph her family all these years later felt incredibly special.

There is something about photographing people who knew you before you became who you are now. Before the career, before the business, before all the years in between.

The people who believe in us when we’re young don’t always know how much their kindness will stay with us.

Katie, thank you for seeing me then. And thank you for trusting me to preserve a little piece of your beautiful family now. 🤍

My latest email is out. 🤍

A little note about Fall, the bittersweet feeling of sending my boys back to school, chai tea, homemade apple crisp, the fact that I’m already thinking about Christmas (let's be real, I've been thinking about Christmas for months!!)… and what’s coming up at the studio over the next few months.

I also shared a little more about the way I’m approaching photography these days—because for me, the photograph is only the beginning. I want the images we create together to become something you can actually live with, enjoy, and pass down.

If you’re thinking about a Fall family session, or you’ve been eyeing one of this year’s Christmas Portrait Experiences, there are a few dates still available.

You can read the full note here:

A little Christmas nostalgia. 🤍

One of my favorite things about photographs is getting to look back through the years and see just how much my kids have grown.

When Warren was about a year and a half, I started an “in the box” Christmas pajama tradition with him. I missed his first Christmas, but we’ve done it every year since — and then added a second little boy to the tradition in 2024. I may have been slow to edit last years Christmas Box, but I’m ready to order new Christmas pajamas and add 2026 to our collection.

But somewhere along the way, I’ve taken a whole lot of other Christmas pictures, too. Looking through them all tonight made me smile because I had forgotten just how little they were.

Different faces. Different personalities. Different stages of childhood. And somehow, every year, I always think, this one is my favorite.

That’s the thing about photographs. You don’t always realize how much has changed while you’re living it. Then you look back and suddenly you can see it all.

Always take the pictures. ❤️

Ben, Andra, and family at the Prairie Center Preserve in Olathe.

We spent the evening at Prairie Center Preserve in Olathe, which turned out to be such a beautiful setting for their family session. The property has these wide-open prairie views, long walking paths and beautiful pockets of trees, so we had plenty of room to wander.

The light was spectacular, too.

I loved the mix we got from this session — the whole family together, the kids individually, Ben and his wife, and plenty of photographs of the kids just being kids.
