The Framingham 325th Celebration Committee, in conjunction with the City of Framingham, will host a reception to unveil the Framingham 325th Juried Photography Exhibition on Wednesday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. My photograph, "McAuliffe Library at Dusk" is part of the exhibit. I will be there from 6 to 6:30 pm.

The reception will take place at the Memorial Building, 150 Concord Street, lowest level, where the exhibit is on display.

About three dozen photographs are included in the exhibition and will be displayed along the walls outside the conference room. The exhibition will remain on view through May 2026.

In celebration of Framingham’s 325th anniversary, photographers were invited to visually interpret what the City means to them today. The response was enthusiastic, resulting in a wide range of styles, subjects, and perspectives that together tell a rich story of Framingham as it is lived and experienced now.

The works on view capture the people, landscapes, and moments that define the community, from vibrant holiday celebrations and striking sunsets to quiet, everyday scenes.

Each photograph offers a personal lens into Framingham’s culture and history, reflecting both shared experiences and individual points of view.

Located in the National Botanic Gardens of Kirstenbosch, South Africa, this beautiful bridge was created without removing any trees!

Like the tree snake (boomslang in Afrikaans) this raised walkway winds and dips its way through and over the trees. It is a steel-and-timber structure, 427 feet long.

The walkway is designed to be lightweight, non-intrusive and low-maintenance. It is painted to blend into the vegetation and to allow moss growth, and the slender support columns are specially designed to allow climbers to grow on them. The main spine is tubular steel. The lean-rail timber is African Padauk. The decking is South African Pine. Architects: Mark Thomas Architects, with Chris Bisset Engineers: Henry Fagan and Partners.

Scenes from around Stellenbosch, South Africa. Wheels from a former wheat factory. Many examples of Dutch colonial and Victorian architecture. In the historic downtown area, all buildings must be white, made from a limestone mix. However, the people, artwork, and food are extremely colorful. There are no street signs, instead street names are painted on curbs. Much less visual clutter.

Built environment scenes from around South Africa. The video clip shows a dung beetle building a perfect sphere out of elephant dung. He will roll this around to attract a female. The bigger the ball the better. Once he attracts a female, he will make a tunnel in the ground where they will live. The dung ball will provide nourishment for their larva when they arrive into the world.

Victoria Falls Hotel, Zimbabwe, an acclaimed Natural Wonder of the World. The Edwardian-style five star hotel, built in 1904, was splendidly redecorated in 2013. It features beautiful hand-painted walls and a five star view of the bridge that I walked across (on the underside) earlier this week. The bridge connects Zimbabwe and Zambia. 🇿🇼

Victoria Falls Bridge connects Zimbabwe and Zambia in Africa. Built in 1905, it was structurally sound enough to add a wider and higher elevated platform so that vehicles could cross in the late 1930s. The original structure was riveted, and the newer addition was connected with nuts and bolts. It was so well built that it did not need any additional reinforcement when the elevated platform was added. It is the highest bridge above ground level in Africa, and is painted with brushes by hand every six years. Unlike the Golden Gate Bridge, the supporting beams are not level, but tipped so that the mist from the waterfall nearby runs off, and less rust forms. It was interesting to take a tour on a catwalk along the underside of the bridge to the top elevation from Zambia to Zimbabwe and back! 🇿🇲
