On May 6, 1527, the attacking army broke into Rome. Most of the pope’s other guards fled. The Swiss stayed.
They fought a rear action while the pope escaped through a secret tunnel. Not a tunnel inside the Vatican. An underground passage connecting the Vatican to Castel Sant’Angelo. It still exists. You can walk it today.

Of the 189 Swiss Guards, 147 died. The survivors got the pope to safety. Then kept fighting until only 42 were left.

May 6 is still the most important day for the Swiss Guard. Every new guard is sworn in on that date.

The pope never forgot.

After the Sack of Rome, the Vatican decided to trust only one group. The Swiss. They had proved their loyalty with blood. No other mercenary company had stayed to die.

From that day forward, the pope’s personal bodyguards would only be Swiss men. Catholic men. Trained soldiers.

The world’s largest Basilica, designed by Antoni Gaudi, has taken over 140 years to complete as of this year. Located in Barcelona, the Basílica de la Sagrada Família stands as a testament to resilience and perseverance. This magnificent temple seamlessly integrates Gaudi’s two greatest inspirations: faith and nature. The interior columns resemble trees branching out to form a stone forest, while over 300 sculpted figures on the Nativity facade narrate the story of Jesus. 🇪🇸
