As many families know, moving a parent into assisted living or a nursing facility is one of life's most difficult transitions. Recently, I was invited to photograph Hartwell Place through Chicago Methodist Senior Services in the heart of Andersonville.

Over the course of creating these images, I was struck by the warmth of the staff and the culture of dignity, respect, and intentional care that fills the community. The residents were met where they are—with choices, conversation, art, and spaces designed for reflection, creativity, and connection.

What moved me most was the dedication behind the scenes. Every interaction felt thoughtful and deeply human. These photographs are my attempt to honor that spirit and the people who make Hartwell Place feel less like a facility and more like a home.

"Behind you, Before you, Around you, Within you."

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools senior clap out is one of those rare school traditions where time feels like it pauses for a moment. As seniors walk the halls for the final time, they’re met with cheers from younger students and teachers who have watched them grow up within the same shared space. It is equal parts celebration and goodbye.

What makes it so special to document is its authenticity. There’s no staging or performance, just real connection: pride, nostalgia, and the quiet realization of a chapter closing.

In a place like University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where community runs deep, the clap out becomes a visual record of belonging—one that captures both the weight of leaving and the warmth of being celebrated.Tone Stockenström Photo Stockenström: The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools senior clap out is one of those rare school traditions where time feels like it pauses for a moment. Photography lets me hold onto the fleeting, beautiful moments of connection that make us human. CandidPhotography

I had the honor of photographing the Illinois Prison Project community conversation about Voting, Civic Engagement and Incarceration at the National Public Housing Museum in Chicago.

The panel discussion, Democracy on Both Sides of the Wall, brought together an incredible group of leaders, educators, advocates, and changemakers whose work centers on justice, civic engagement, public policy, and community empowerment.

Moderated by Dr. Christina Rivers, Associate Professor of Political Science at DePaul University, the conversation featured Marshan Allen, Director of Policy & Communications for the Illinois Prison Project; Brian Beals, Executive Director of Mud Theatre Project; and Stevie Valles, Co-Executive Director of Chicago Votes.

Together, the panelists shared powerful perspectives on democracy, equity, incarceration, and the importance of civic participation in shaping stronger communities.
