Okay… since we’re apparently saying things out loud now… 😂

I need to say something, and I need you to hear me with your whole heart…

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WORK FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER ON PICTURE DAY!!

You already own a dance studio…

Which means, as far as I can tell, you’re currently holding approximately 47 unpaid positions…

You’re the owner.
The artistic director.
The teacher.
The receptionist.
The costume coordinator.
The accountant.
The therapist.
The janitor.
The lost-and-found department.
The emergency seamstress.

And somehow you’re also the person crawling around on the floor looking for ONE SINGLE N**E JAZZ SHOE because little Madisyn swears she “literally JUST had it.”

You have 136 dancers coming through the building.

There are 412 garment bags hanging from every available surface.

Someone is crying…

Nobody knows why…

There’s a toddler in a tutu eating Goldfish crackers underneath the front desk.

A mother is steaming a costume in the bathroom…

Someone forgot tights…

Someone brought the wrong tights…

Someone has tights, but apparently they are the WRONG SHADE OF BALLET PINK and we are now approaching a Level 4 national emergency…

There are approximately 86,000 bobby pins in the building and yet somehow NO ONE CAN FIND A BOBBY PIN!!

And then…

Your photographer walks in and says:

“Soooo… how do you want to organize everybody?”

Ma’am… Absolutely not. 😂

This is the part where I would like studio owners everywhere to collectively stop accepting new employment positions on picture day.

Because when you hire me, I am not showing up with a camera and then handing YOU another clipboard…

I have a solid system…

I know how to move dancers through.

I know how to pose them.

I know that we cannot spend 14 minutes photographing one child while 73 other dancers slowly fossilize in the hallway.

I know we need to MOVE…

I know how to look at a dancer and fix the little things.

Hands… feet… lines… posture… angles…

Because there is nothing quite like spending 15 years teaching a child beautiful technique only to get the pictures back and discover your photographer caught every leap approximately three business days after its peak.

Beautiful dancer… Beautiful costume… $900 worth of rhinestones…

And we photographed her at the exact moment she looked like she tripped over an extension cord.

NO. 😂

Dance photography is its own animal.

And picture day should not require the studio owner to become an air traffic controller standing in the hallway screaming:

“GROUP THREE TO STUDIO B. WHERE IS EMMA? WHO HAS EMMA? WHY IS EMMA EATING A STRING CHEESE? EMMA YOU ARE IN FOUR MINUTES.”

Meanwhile your photographer is standing there holding a $6,000 camera asking if anybody knows what group comes next.

I DO.

That’s literally why you hired me!!

My job is to come into your studio and make this entire ridiculous rhinestone-covered traveling circus run as smoothly as humanly possible.

Your job?

Run your studio.

Love your dancers.

Fix whatever costume has inevitably split directly up the butt five minutes before photos.

And maybe, just maybe… drink your coffee while it’s still hot.

I’ll handle the pictures…

Because you’re not hiring me just because I own a camera.

You’re hiring me because I know what the heck to do with it.

And because neither one of us has time to spend nine hours in a dance studio wondering where Emma went.

She’s still eating the string cheese.

I guarantee it. 😂

So, studio owners… Just hire me already.

Seriously. 😂

Let me run picture day. Let me photograph your dancers. Let me worry about keeping the schedule moving, the posing, the lighting, the timing, the feet, the hands, the rhinestones and whatever the heck Emma is doing with that string cheese.

You have enough s**t to do…

Hire the photographer who knows dance AND knows how to run a dance picture day.

I’ve got this… You go drink your coffee.

Seriously… It’s cold again.

😂🤦🏼‍♀️

With love, Me

08/26/2026

Okay… I know my photography business page can be a little… stuffy.

Professional… polished… Very much “Hello! Thank you so much for reaching out. I’d love to discuss your studio’s photography needs.”

That’s me… I’m Liz.

I’m professional.

I use complete sentences.

I probably have a spreadsheet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I have had ENOUGH… 😂

Can we please talk candidly for one second about something that has been festering deep within my professionally composed soul?

WHY ARE DANCE STUDIOS STILL HIRING MISTY FROM FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE TO PHOTOGRAPH THEIR DANCERS?!

You know Misty…

She’s 23… She got a camera for Christmas.

She took some really cute pictures of her sister standing in a field at sunset and now she’s “looking to expand into dance photography.”

She’ll photograph your entire studio for $187, two energy drinks and ✨exposure✨ because she’s “really trying to build her portfolio.”

And Janet, who owns the studio, thinks: “Well… Liz does cost more.”

YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT I DO, JANET.

Because I know what I’m doing. 😂

Meanwhile Misty comes bebopping into picture day with a 24mm lens and enough confidence to invade a small country…

She puts the camera on Auto… because apparently the little M (that stands for manual) on the dial is decorative.

She sets up two lights she bought on Amazon last Tuesday, points them directly at your dancers like she’s interrogating them about the whereabouts of stolen diamonds, and stands approximately 11 inches away.

CLICK 📸

Congratulations… Little Harper now has a size 37 foot.

Her toes are bigger than her eyeballs… Her head is somewhere near Nebraska… One leg appears six inches longer than the other.

And that beautiful pointed foot she has spent NINE MONTHS perfecting is now coming directly toward the camera looking like it could kick down a barn door.

But Misty was $600 cheaper, so… SAVINGS. 💰😂

Never mind that Harper’s been dancing since she was three…

Never mind that she stretches, rehearses, takes corrections, practices her turnout and has worked on that exact pose approximately 4,782 times…

We can’t appreciate ANY OF IT because her left foot currently has its own zip code.

And listen… I am sure Misty is a lovely person.

She probably rescues puppies. I wish her nothing but happiness and reasonably priced car insurance…

BUT GET THE 24MM LENS AWAY FROM THE BALLERINAS!!!

Because here is the part that makes my left eye start twitching…

YOUR DANCE PHOTOS ARE MARKETING!!

They are not just something Mom buys every year, sticks in an 8x10 frame and gives Grandma for Christmas.

Potential families are looking at these images.

They’re scrolling your Facebook… They’re creeping your Instagram… They’re looking at your website thinking:

“Do I want my kid to dance there?”

And GOOD photography answers that question before you ever speak to them…

They see gorgeous lighting… Beautiful technique…
Strong lines… Pointed toes… Confident dancers… Tiny six-year-olds looking like they just finished a three-month residency on Broadway!

And suddenly some mom is sitting on her couch eating shredded cheese directly from the bag thinking:

“DANG. WHERE DOES THAT KID DANCE?!”

Click.

Click.

Click.

Registration.

HELLO, MARKETING!!

Meanwhile, bad photography has Mom wondering why everyone at your studio has disproportionately enormous feet and no knees.

This is why dance photography is NOT just regular photography with a tutu involved…

You have to understand dance… You have to understand photography.

You need to know lenses… lighting… angles.. movement… lines… technique… posing…

For the love of God, you need to know what a sickled foot looks like…

You need to notice that hand doing something weird over there.

You need to know when a pose is actually showcasing the dancer and when it looks like she slipped on a grape but is trying to play it cool. 😎

And you need to catch all of that BEFORE you press the shutter… Not six hours later when you’re editing and think:

“Hmm. Something seems off.”

YES, MISTY… HER FEMUR APPEARS TO BE FOUR FEET LONG.

THAT’S WHAT’S OFF.

😂😂😂

And yes… I cost more. Of course I do…

You aren’t paying me because I own a camera…

Misty owns a camera.

Your Uncle Gary owns a camera.

Half the parents sitting in the lobby own cameras.

You are paying me because I KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT.

You’re paying for years of experience that tell me where to stand, what lens to use, how to light the dancer, how to photograph her body correctly, what needs adjusted and how to showcase the technique YOUR STUDIO taught her.

Because when I do my job correctly… YOU look good.

Your dancers look incredible… your instructors look incredible… your studio looks incredible… your website looks better… your social media looks better.

Parents actually WANT the photos!

Potential families see your dancers and think:

“Whatever they’re doing over there, I want my kid doing THAT.”

And Janet, who owns the studio three towns over and saved $600 hiring Marketplace Misty, is sitting in her office staring at an entire gallery of children with feet the size of snowshoes wondering why enrollment is down…

Okay… I’m done.

😂

Professional Liz is coming back now…

Let me just straighten my blazer. (Deep breath, count to three…)

There…

Hello… Welcome back to my professional photography page.

Let’s recap today’s completely calm and educational lesson:

Pay the money.

Hire the professional dance photographer.

Stop trying to save money on the exact photographs you’re going to use to MARKET YOUR BUSINESS.

Buy once, Cry once.

Get phenomenal photos.

Showcase the dancers your instructors have worked their asses off teaching.

Make your studio look like the badass place it actually is.

And for the love of God…

DO NOT LET MISTY GET WITHIN TEN FEET OF LITTLE HARPER WITH THAT 24MM LENS.

Harper has worked too hard on that pointed toe for it to look like a rotisserie chicken coming through the camera.

Hire the professional… Preferably me. 🤷🏻‍♀️📸

Okay… I feel better now.

Back to spreadsheets. 😂💃

Every once in a while, a message comes through that reminds me exactly why I do what I do.

I don’t just take photos. I get the incredible privilege of documenting milestones, passions, friendships, accomplishments, and memories that families will look back on for years to come.

Knowing that a gallery can make someone smile, bring happy tears, or have someone “go crazy” when they see their images… that’s something I’ll never take for granted.

Thank you to every family, dancer, gymnast, senior, and client who trusts me with these moments. Your support means more than you know, and messages like this truly make my day.

I feel incredibly blessed to play a small part in so many life journeys. Thank you for allowing me to preserve these memories. ❤️

Happy birthday to our friend Emily!
