The Senior Session was a pleasure, as we discovered several new locations for her photographs. It had a slightly edgy feel, an adventurous attitude, and many “novel” experiences.

Patience is key. Occasionally, we must wait for the right moment to arise. Although I could not have planned this, being patient ultimately led to this stunning image of Ichabod the Crane. (Yes … the park volunteer is knowledgeable about all of their names) Ichabod spent considerable time walking along the beach to my right before finally taking flight.

The winter landscape hits differently on Urridafoss. Usually flanked with lush greenery and wild flowers, Urriðafoss is a waterfall in the Þjórsá River. Þjórsá is Iceland's longest river, 230 km, and Urriðafoss is the most voluminous waterfall in the country. This mighty river drops down (360 m3/sec) by the edge of the Þjórsárhraun lava field in beautiful and serene surroundings. (Yes, all the "rock" you see is lava rock.) Þjórsárhraun lava field is the result of the greatest lava flow on earth since the Ice Age.

1/19/26 — Aurora borealis, is a spectacular natural phenomenon characterized by vibrant, undulating curtains of light in the nocturnal sky, typically manifesting in shades of green, pink, violet and if you’re lucky, red. This phenomenon is caused by the collision of solar particles with Earth’s magnetic field, resulting in a mesmerizing display of moving ribbons, rays, or waves—a truly enchanting experience.

This scene burst from the sky as if it were bird feathers, flying in the sky, and leaving a green cast on the ground below.

I've always seen great photography and never considered the harsh weather conditions that may have been attached to it. It's just not connected with the visual sense.

This was one of the most challenging photo excursions I've taken. Iceland is COLD ... especially in January. The Icelandic winds are relentless, which makes the temps feel much colder. It's the kind of cold where you go outside and you just want to turn around and run back inside to the warm comfort.

Stabilizing my tripod from this wind while shooting long exposure was critical and I feel fortunate to have gotten a shot as decent as this.

Seeing these dancing feathers of Aurora in the sky was breathtaking and an event I will never forget. I will share a few more images later of the elusive Aurora, but for now, isn't she just beautiful?

Truth.
