Okay but seriously… what are we wearing for family photos?
The biggest thing I tell people is coordinate, do not perfectly match. Everybody does not need to show up in white shirts and jeans. Pick a color palette and let everyone wear something that works with it.
Start with Mom. Always. Because if Mom feels good, the whole session goes better. Then build everyone else around her. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, denim, creams, warm browns, muted greens and blues always look so good. Add some texture too knits, linen, denim, layers, dresses, jackets, accessories. That is what makes everything feel pulled together without looking too matchy-matchy.
Things I would skip: giant logos, neon colors, everybody in the exact same outfit, and anything you are going to spend the whole session tugging at because you hate how it fits.
Most importantly, wear something that actually feels like you. You do not need to go buy an entirely new wardrobe. You just need outfits that look good together, feel comfortable, and let you move without thinking about your clothes every five seconds.
And yes, shoes matter. Please do not wear something you cannot walk in unless you are fully committed to suffering for the photo. BE comfy!
If you are stuck, send me pictures of what you are thinking. I will absolutely help you pull it together.
