Here's a great blue heron I saw cruising over Siletz Bay near the end of the Salishan Spit yesterday. The background isn't the sky, but rather the glassy bay surface, since there was no wind and I was standing on the elevated road (Salishan Dr.) looking a bit down on the heron. It had its mouth open during all of the ten or so photos I shot of it, and apparently there are various explanations for that, but who is to know which one is right? Unfortunately, if I'd asked the heron why it was doing that, it wouldn't have understood my question. I'm waiting on further AI advancements to allow us to talk with the animals to get answers on that, and many other questions I have.

After getting skunked on the aurora borealis/Northern Lights on Sunday night, since I didn't stay out until 3 AM, I went back out to try again last night. My planned unique composition didn't really pan out, so I decided to try to find an alternative location. This was shot near the top of Rocky Point Mountain, a little over 1,500' elevation, SW of Scappoose. It's not a great composition, but if you're just trying to capture the aurora, this spot is a good choice close to Portland as it looks directly north, and you can see far into the distance looking across the horizon, with little light pollution. The scant city lights you can see were in Longview 30 miles north of my spot.

I went out for a beach walk yesterday on the Salishan Spit, and got some photos of some birds I don't usually see: 1. The cutie pie tan and white bird is a rare and threatened western snowy plover, and it was only the third time I'd seen one of these here. 2. The black and white shorebird on the log is a Black Turnstone (new lifer for me). 3. The brown and white bird near the shore is a black-bellied plover. Since Oregon experienced some significant flooding, Siletz Bay looked like chocolate milk, and the bay water was mixing with the ocean water when it flowed out the mouth of the bay into the ocean, so that's why the surf in the background of the latter two photos looks unusually brown.

Last night the full Harvest Super Moon rose, did you see it? I did, and here it is peeking over Mt. Hood.

Here's a red-tailed hawk I saw recently along a country road on a utility pole with some interesting old electrical insulators. I'm told by an expert in my family that the insulators are probably pre-1960.

Yesterday morning I revisited a familiar spot in Newport for another full moonset shot. The forecast called for high clouds in the region, which was promising for a colorful sunrise behind me at this location. I was hoping for enough color in the sky for at least some of it to also show up in the western sky I was shooting - and thankfully, it did. In doing some pixel peeping of this photo on my computer, I noticed about 150 birds in this photo, mostly murres and cormorants on the Yaquina Head rocks, and some gulls flying in front of the moon.

Due to Instagram's newer requirements for a horizontal aspect ratio of 1.91 x 1, this photo will not be posted there, because I can't crop this image in a way that is satisfactory to me.

Downtown Portland at sunset last night. This was shot from Mt. Scott, which is seven miles from downtown. It's a composition of downtown from an angle rarely seen, so it looks different. One thing I noticed was that you can see the Montgomery Park building in the center right, with the red "Montgomery Park" letters on top. It looks like that building is just another building in the cluster of downtown skyscrapers, but it's not, it's actually in a NW Portland industrial area 2 miles NW of downtown. I plan to go back to this spot.
