Here's some recent bird photos I shot in the Salishan Spit area, either on the Siletz Bay side, the ocean side or the very end at the mouth. Included here are short-billed dowitchers, least sandpipers, elegant terns, a caspian tern, an osprey, a semi-palmated plover, and a surf scoter. The elegant terns were especially nice to capture, since they're a bit rare in that area, and I'd never seen them before.

It had been a while since I'd been out to shoot a sunrise. Since the forecast was that a storm is on the way, and the leading edge of an incoming storm is nearly always perfect conditions for a colorful sunrise, I went out to Chanticleer Point/Portland Women's Forum in the Columbia River Gorge.

Yesterday I went for a beach walk with my wife on the Salishan Spit on the Oregon Coast, as we will do, and saw this osprey fishing at the edge of the shore. It was successful a few times, and took off to go eat the fish, likely surf perch, and then come back and catch another. I didn't get any photos of it catching the fish, but I did get these as it was soaring into position, and then doing its flapping its wings thing to maintain a "hover" as it scoped out its prey. It was very close to us, but seemed more concerned with catching the fish. I've seen osprey do this on Siletz Bay on the other side of the spit several times, but this was the first time I'd seen them do it in the ocean, but that's why ospreys are also known as sea hawks, I guess.

Here's a great blue heron I saw cruising over Siletz Bay near the end of the Salishan Spit yesterday. The background isn't the sky, but rather the glassy bay surface, since there was no wind and I was standing on the elevated road (Salishan Dr.) looking a bit down on the heron. It had its mouth open during all of the ten or so photos I shot of it, and apparently there are various explanations for that, but who is to know which one is right? Unfortunately, if I'd asked the heron why it was doing that, it wouldn't have understood my question. I'm waiting on further AI advancements to allow us to talk with the animals to get answers on that, and many other questions I have.

After getting skunked on the aurora borealis/Northern Lights on Sunday night, since I didn't stay out until 3 AM, I went back out to try again last night. My planned unique composition didn't really pan out, so I decided to try to find an alternative location. This was shot near the top of Rocky Point Mountain, a little over 1,500' elevation, SW of Scappoose. It's not a great composition, but if you're just trying to capture the aurora, this spot is a good choice close to Portland as it looks directly north, and you can see far into the distance looking across the horizon, with little light pollution. The scant city lights you can see were in Longview 30 miles north of my spot.
