Osprey takes to the skies of Colorado. The past couple of weekend my focus (pun intended) has been on these cool raptors. That did not pan out quite as well as I had hoped but I did manage some cool captures. This particular male proved to be a very willing photo subject, oftentimes perching in the trees around a pond, keeping watch for a potential meal. Here, it takes flight with a beautiful, soft blue sky behind him.

Random photo geek posting... released some updated firmware for my primary camera (EOS R5 MII). The highlighted will make me VERY happy. Long overdue. For the non-photo geeks... Pre-continuous shooting allows the photographer to hold the shutter button part way and when doing so, the camera is constantly storing the last 20 to 30 frames temporarily but they are only saved once the shutter is pressed all the way. This is fantastic for when you are sitting there anticipating a bird taking flight as it keeps you from missing the first part of the action.

Pelican’s flight with the snow-covered Rocky Mountains. One of those, “My wife loves pelicans so I have to take pictures of them” posts. 😉 This past weekend I photographed a number of them in northern Colorado. This one Sunday flew perfectly from the west allowing me to capture not only it but the mountains behind. Snow up there is not something we have seen much of this year, so it was a welcome sight following last week’s storms.

“You light up my life…” Rather than use their private nest, this pair of Swainson’s hawks made use of more public facilities, a streetlight. 😉 It is Mother’s Day and, well, this image is somewhat appropriate because it shows some of what goes into becoming a mother. Ha!

Burrowing owl focused on flight. Wanting a closer look at the that pesky human, this burrowing owl flew toward me. Unfortunately the angle from where I was at to it was not ideal with me looking down a hill but it made for a fun capture.

Bald eagle makes an evening departure. A nice shot of this handsome fellow. During an evening photo excursion recently, I visited one of my bald eagle nests to check on the family. All was good and they were getting ready to bed down for the night. Dad decided it was a perfect time to go for one more flight. The light was gorgeous and golden and lit him up beautifully.

Grumpy deer buck attacks another. Well, someone was not having a good day apparently. This mule deer buck did not seem to appreciate a younger one’s presence. It reared up, lunged, and brought its hooves down hard on the smaller deer. Poor light and a slow shutter speed don’t make for quality pics but the action is fun and worth sharing.

Mama great horned owl standing watch over the family home. 🦉 Normally she hangs out in an adjacent tree and watches from above. On this evening a couple weeks ago, she was perched at the entrance to the tree cavity. As you can tell by the look on her face, she was clearly very happy to see me. 🤣 All three of her owlets have now left the nest and are hanging out nearby, slowly learning to fly. With the trees fully leafed out, it is getting harder and harder to spot them.

Osprey takes a dive, prepares to make the catch of the day. Whoohoo! It has been a couple of years since I was able to catch a nice dive of one of these awesome raptors. While the light was less than ideal, I was happy to get one this past Sunday. This osprey circled the pond multiple times, watching the water for an unsuspecting fish below. Finally, it brought itself to a near hover, oriented itself head down, tucked its wings back, extended its talons and dove with amazing speed. In the end, it was successful, getting a nice meal for itself and leaving me happy with the shots I got. Getting this action is probably the most challenging of any I attempt. It all happens in a split second and tracking the bird as it dives at up to 50mph is very difficult.

Head on with a pod of pelicans. These guys looked quite serious and almost intimidating. 😉 Yesterday morning I got back to camp to enjoy some coffee with my bride when she pointed out there were a bunch of American white pelicans in the pond right by our RV. Well, coffee can wait I suppose! Of course, my wife didn’t mind since it meant I got pictures of her favorite bird. This group was largely focused on fishing, swimming along and synchronizing dipping their heads in the water to scoop up a meal. It took a while, but I was finally able to get a few captures like this with all of them with their heads up and looking toward me.
