Room Reveal | Cross Roads, Texas

Blue grasscloth walls, a warm wood fireplace, florals, animal print, collected art, black furniture, brass details; and then you walk out of the bedroom and HELLO, hot pink stair runner.

This is one of my favorite things about photographing Britney’s work. There’s always another little moment to find, another pattern tucked into the room, and usually at least one thing I would never have thought to put together that makes complete sense once I see it.

I’m a sucker for a bold floor, and this one understood the assignment.

Inside this hospitality-inspired amenity space in Turtle Creek, Lauren McGowan paired that graphic black-and-white stone with soft oak, creamy upholstery, and warm brass.

Don’t mind me, I’m over here trying to decide which detail I like best. 😂

This kitchen by Chelsea Dunn Design started here, at this hand-drawn illustration.

And somehow Chelsea looked at a few lines on a piece of paper and said, essentially, yes, let’s make THAT.

Meanwhile, I can spend an unreasonable amount of time deciding whether something in a photograph needs to move two inches to the left.

The finished kitchen is such a good one, deep green cabinetry, warm wood, dark stone, and that incredible island that gives the whole room so much character.

In Brittney | Brittney Lane Interiors Maison de Bleu renovation project in Carthage, Texas, warm neutrals, bold black arched doors and carefully considered sight lines create a modern traditional home rooted in European design.

Each space feels distinct with warm white paint colors, natural textures and recurring black accents carry the design from one room to the next.

In the upstairs guest bathroom of Kate Thacker Home’s Modern Parisian Craftsman project in Dallas, pink marble tile meets a black vanity, brass sconces, geometric flooring and a dramatic stone-slab shower.

Every material is allowed to be bold and they make one another even better.

Before I photographed designers’ homes, I photographed mine. And it was incredibly frustrating.

I knew these rooms well. I knew how they felt to stand in, throw holiday parties and open up way too many bottles of Champagne in. Which details I loved and what made them feel like home. Getting any of that to translate into a photograph was another story.

I would move the camera. Move the furniture. Take the photograph. Hate it. Move everything again.

It was one of the first ways I learned that experiencing a room and photographing a room are two very different things.

A space can feel beautiful in person and still need something completely different for the camera. The composition has to make sense within four edges. Furniture often needs to move. Details that register in person can suddenly become distracting. And the things that make a space special have to be brought forward.

My house became my testing ground for figuring all of that out.

Years later, I still use so much of what those frustrating afternoons taught me. I just move other people’s furniture now.

Documenting the relationship from sketch to finished space.

I love to capture the evolution of a designer’s original vision into the room it eventually becomes. The colors, materials and details may begin on paper, but seeing those ideas translated into a space that somebody gets to live in is where the story comes together.

For this kitchen, rich green cabinetry, warm woods, dramatic stone and that unexpected Aurora Brown island create a palette that feels interesting, layered and completely at home together.

There’s something lovely about a bathroom that honors the history of a home while simultaneously embracing modern living.

Original character, like the pressed tin ceiling and black clawfoot tub, joins classic materials: marble tile, polished chrome, beadboard, and graphic black-and-white mosaic, to create a space that feels as though it has always belonged.
