You cannot pour from an empty cup

Ironically, Kylie's tattoo seemed to be the perfect motto for this day.

In the last year, I’ve become so passionate about community amongst creatives. It was such a joy to host another Day of Rest and meet so many wonderful new friends in the industry. It was simply a day to rest and learn and allow our creativity to reignite. Thanks to the friends who joined. Your presence made the day joyful.

Some imperfect film from a wedding a few years ago in Boston.

Around the time I shot this wedding was about the same time I decided to put both feet in and go full-time with my photography business. I think I mustered up the courage after spending a weekend with other creatives. I truly had no business going full-time. I maybe had two weddings booked for that year. MAYBE.

My business story has not been one of instant success and endless bookings. It sometimes feels like that’s the only side people allow us to see of their business. But rather, my last three years have been defined by little wins over time that I’ve learned to cherish. And a few big wins that remind me this isn’t for nothing.

Blake + McKenna

The night before their wedding, I saw one of McKenna’s bridesmaids call this the “Royal Wedding.” And after attending it, I would say it was absolutely that.

There is no greater joy than marrying the love of your life surrounded by people you absolutely adore. McKenna and Blake’s day was marked by their undeniable love for each other and their people. I am biased because much of their bridal party were friends of mine, but the emotion and excitement in the air was tangible the entire day.

Surround yourself with friends who will love you the way Blake and McKenna’s people do. Surround yourself with friends who are willing to walk through life’s greatest joys and greatest sorrows with you. Surround yourself with people like this, and your life will be full.

A romantic evening spent at Founders Garden in downtown Athens.

As we started this shoot, Hayden and Jamie told me they had never taken professional photos before. I actually hear this from a majority of my couples, and it makes me smile because I know their photos are going to be so genuine and sweet. Not to be cheesy, but all you need is love for each other, and your photos will be lovely.

I think this Beverly Hills elopement reminded me of the simplicity of weddings. There were about 10 people in attendance, including us photographers. We spent the first hour taking some portraits and the second hour capturing their ceremony. It was a wedding day stripped down to its most basic form. I got to shoot the whole day on film, which added to the slow and simple feeling.
