The Sony A9 III is built for speed, and underwater, that opens up some seriously interesting possibilities. It features a 24.6-megapixel stacked full-frame sensor, 120 fps RAW burst shooting, 120 autofocus calculations per second, 4K video up to 120p, and perhaps most importantly, it was the first full-frame camera to introduce a global shutter.

That global shutter is what really sets the A9 III apart. It eliminates rolling shutter and allows for incredibly high flash sync speeds, giving underwater photographers much more control over ambient light. That means more flexibility when shooting sunballs, creating black backgrounds in bright conditions, or trying to freeze fast-moving subjects.

We also found the autofocus to be excellent underwater, particularly for fast-moving subjects and blackwater photography. Pair that with its extremely fast burst shooting and the A9 III starts to make a lot of sense for photographers shooting pelagics, baitballs, fast action, or those split-second moments that are very easy to miss. 🔥

The Sony A7C II packs full-frame image quality into one of Sony’s most compact camera bodies, making it a really interesting option for underwater photographers who want a smaller, lighter setup without sacrificing too much performance. It features a 33-megapixel full-frame sensor, Sony’s AI autofocus processor, 10 fps burst shooting, 5-axis in-body stabilization, and 4K video up to 60p.

One of the things that impressed us most underwater was the autofocus. The A7C II uses Sony’s newer AI-based subject recognition and tracking, and we found it noticeably better at picking up moving subjects, including bull sharks in Beqa Lagoon.

We tested the A7C II while diving in Fiji, where its compact size was a huge bonus for travel, especially with tighter baggage limits. More importantly, the smaller body doesn’t mean compromising on image quality. You’re still getting that excellent 33MP full-frame Sony sensor with great dynamic range, low-light performance, and plenty of detail. 🔥

The Sony A6700 packs a lot of camera into a very small body. With a 26-megapixel APS-C sensor, 11 fps burst shooting, 5-axis in-body image stabilization, Sony’s dedicated AI autofocus processor, and some seriously capable video specs, it’s a great option for underwater photographers who want a compact setup without giving up too much performance.

One of the biggest improvements over previous Sony APS-C cameras is the autofocus. The A6700 uses 759 phase-detection points and Sony’s AI-based subject recognition, and in our underwater testing it did an impressive job of locking onto and tracking subjects, including small fish while shooting macro.

For video shooters, it can record 6K-oversampled 4K/60p in 10-bit 4:2:2, plus 4K/120p with a crop, giving you plenty of flexibility for underwater video as well.

After putting the A6700 through its paces underwater, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite images shot with it. 🔥
