🤿 Learn about Socorro! 👇

👀 Where is Socorro Island? Socorro Island is a small volcanic island situated 400 km off Mexico’s west coast.

🤩 What can I see in Socorro? Socorro is renowned for encounters with the world’s friendliest manta rays and other large marine animals like sharks, dolphins, tuna and whale sharks.

🇲🇽 How do I dive Socorro? The only way to scuba dive in Socorro is via liveaboard, and there are plenty of options ranging from budget to luxury. Most Socorro trips last 8 nights and the crossing from Cabo to Socorro typically takes about 24 hours

⏱️ When is the best time for diving? The scuba diving season in the Socorro Islands runs from November to May, and the liveaboard itineraries correspond. The best time to dive Socorro depends on what you want to see and what conditions you are comfortable with. Manta rays and various sharks are present year-round. November is good for seeing whale sharks! Humpback whales congregate around the archipelago in February and March, although divers have to be lucky to see them underwater.

🐙 Some of the world’s most intelligent creatures and some tips on photographing them!

1️⃣ Octopus have the unique ability to squeeze into any space larger than their mouths (beaks) so keep a look-out for their hole/den!
2️⃣ Follow the breadcrumbs - if you know what a certain species eats and you see a pile of that food outside a hole, you’ve almost certainly found where an octopus lives.
3️⃣ Approach slowly - these critters are curious but shy. Be slow and respectful.
4️⃣ Search for a fish “friend” - fish often partner with octopus to hunt!
5️⃣ Wide angle or macro?
📣 “The ultimate question for an underwater photographer! In my experience, it depends on the size of an octopus. I like to use a Macro Lens for blue spotted octopus, red octopus, and other octopus smaller than a soft ball. For any octopus larger than a soft ball, you can get a nice reef scene with a wide angle lens like a fisheye Lens. The one exception being if you run into a large octopus with a macro lens... In these cases I choose to take dramatic photos of eyes and tentacles. ” - Nirupam Nigam
6️⃣ Use a high shutter speed - Octopus can move quite fast so you might want to try “freeze” the action
7️⃣ Choose your focus point! Generally focus on the eye but with octopus, consider focusing on the tentacles, too.
8️⃣ Consider your background. If an octopus is blending, you may choose to get low - but this is not always the case.

🤓 Knowing where they live, what they eat, and how they behave is essential for capturing an excellent photograph. So make sure you always do your research on the octopus species available in your location and get to know them. After that, it’s a matter of patience and getting to know the local octopus on a more personal level.
