Think about how much life happens between getting a dog and graduating high school.

They’ve been there for regular Tuesdays. Bad moods. Good days. Late nights. Growing up.
All the completely normal stuff nobody thinks to take pictures of.

And then suddenly you’re taking senior photos and getting ready for whatever comes next.

So when Grace wanted photos with her dog, obviously we were making it happen.

These might not be the photos that scream “SENIOR YEAR” the loudest.

But I have a feeling they’re going to be some of the ones that matter most someday.

We’ve somehow decided there are certain days that are “big enough” to hire a photographer for.
But I think we’re missing a whole lot of life in between.
The baby shower your mom spent months planning.

Your dad laughing with someone across the room.

The friends who haven’t all been together in years.
The way everyone reacted when you opened that gift.
The decorations before 50 people walked through the room.

And the picture of you with your mom that neither of you would have thought to stop and take.
This was a baby shower.

But it was also an afternoon where all of these people showed up in one place because a little girl they haven’t even met yet is already so loved.

That feels pretty worthy of photographs to me.
Weddings aren’t the only days you’ll want to remember.

OKAY THIS IS GOING TO BE SO FUN.

Next Saturday my studio is getting taken over by SLIME.
I’m teaming up with Lake Norman Slime Co. for a pop-up slime bar right here at Mia Rose Photography, and your kids get to come in and BUILD THEIR OWN.

Pick the slime. Pick the colors. Pick the add-ins. Make it weird. Make it cute. Make it absolutely loaded with whatever tiny things children apparently need inside slime.

Annie is bringing the slime bar, I’m providing the studio, and OTC Second Saturday is giving you an entire excuse to come hang out in downtown Cornelius for the day.

And parents — they start at TEN DOLLARS.
Ten. Dollars.
For an activity.
That gets them out of the house.
And the mess happens in MY studio.

I feel like I’m really doing something for the community here.

“I hope they behave.”
“I hope they cooperate.”
“I hope they actually smile for you.”

I hear some version of it all the time before family sessions.

But your toddler has no idea how much you paid for pictures.

They don’t know we have a limited amount of time.
And they definitely don’t understand why everyone suddenly cares SO MUCH about whether they’re looking in my direction.
So I don’t expect them to.

They can be shy. They can need Mom. They can wander away. They can take a while to warm up. They can decide the tiny toy in my hand is infinitely more
interesting than anything I had planned.

I’ll adjust.
Because your toddler’s job at family photos isn’t to behave for me.

Their job is to be a toddler. Getting the photos is mine.

…but Grace had other plans.

When she told me she wanted to wake surf in her cap and gown for part of her senior session, obviously my answer was YES.

And she didn’t just get up for a few photos.
She WENT for it.

Gown flying. Absolutely crushing it behind the boat
while I’m trying to shoot fast enough to catch all of it.

I love when someone comes to me with an idea that is so specifically THEM and just lets me run with it.

Easily one of the coolest things I’ve gotten to photograph.

10/10 senior session. No notes.

Extended family sessions sound like a lot of people, a lot of moving parts and a lot
of chaos.

But they don’t have to feel that way.

We’ll get the big group, each individual family, the siblings, the cousins, the
grandparents — all of it.

I’ll handle the rest. You just get everyone there.

Apparently my photography studio is becoming a slime bar.

And I am VERY into it.

Next Saturday, Lake Norman Slime Co. is taking over the studio for a pop-up slime bar during OTC Second Saturday!

Bring the kids in, let them build their own custom slime, and then keep wandering Catawba Ave for everything else happening around town that day.

No appointment.
No photo session.

Just come hang out, make some slime and support a really fun local business.

Technically, I could stand behind my camera and say, “Smile!”

And maybe I’d get one.

But if you’ve ever asked a toddler to smile on command, you know exactly what
that smile looks like.

So instead, I’m going to talk to them. Play with them. Make weird noises. Pull out
something ridiculous. Get down on their level. Figure out what this particular kid
thinks is funny.

And yes, occasionally Mom gets recruited into the operation.
Because I’m not looking for the smile they make when someone tells them to
smile.

I’m waiting for the one they can’t help.
That’s the one I want to photograph.
