This is the second painting I did during Snoqualmie pleinair event. Less than halfway through heavy rain started. I had to hidden from the rain first under a tree and then under back gate of my car and paint awkwardly hand holding painting on an angle. I did not get it done to the level I wanted and there were rain drops on it when I presented it but I still was proud I did two despite the weather. I have worked on it some more back home. The first image is the final and the second one is what I had after pleinair.

My new favorite painting spot: Elk Fields in Snoqualmie. Lots of open ground with visibility far into the distance, variety of tree shapes and mountains.

On an overcast day forest looks flat and uninteresting, but give it some sunlight and it turns magical.

With this painting I intentionally kept color in check not allowing it turn garish green and still have a sense of light.

Mastering the greens is considered the hardest thing in painting. Every winter I spend in anticipation of spring and summer to have another chance to learn it. I think I finally see the subtleties and can paint interesting greens.

1st place. I participated in Snoqualmie Plein Air Paint Out today. It was a challenging paint out with rain pouring down periodically but I am happy because this painting of mine won first place. 🥳

This was a quick pleinair during paint out at Seattle Arboretum capturing the midday sun, the feel of a hot day.

Green on green on green. Greens considered the most challenging color in painting. There’s too much of it late spring and summer. And yet we are able to separate trees from grass from lily pads. They have different shades of green. And that’s the challenge I put in front of me when painting this one: to observe and understand the different shades of green.

Someone noticed that I tend to paint small scenes rather than grand vistas. Indeed I find painting “mundane” more challenging. It’s easy to paint beautiful landscape, but what to do about small scenes that few pay attention to? Aren’t they beautiful too?

Last painting from paint out in Yakima River canyon. This was painted outdoors but from a photo. I caught this light the day before and it was very fleeting.

This one is interesting. First day of paint out with I painted this scene (the second picture), but I didn’t like it. The second day I went back to the same scene and painted it again (the first picture). I like the second time better.
