We really wanted to go to the Maldives for our honeymoon - but we couldn’t swing it back then. The 22 year wait, however, was worth it!
It’s strange to be basically sitting on a sand bar in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It really feels that far from everything. Flying over the atolls on the flight in makes you appreciate the 1192 islands - and the engineering feat required to build out here (let alone build luxurious resorts!).
The water is crystal clear and intensely turquoise, and there is so much life under the surface.
A highlight was the snorkelling trip where they threw hunks of chum into the water to attract the sharks - right before launching our 12 year old kid into the mix. He survived. It was incredible.

Jaipur: the pink city. I was told that they considered pink, blue or yellow. Pink was a good choice.
Jaipur is a city of decadence, decayed decadence, and just plain decay. The palaces are astounding in their intricacy, detail and vibrance - juxtaposed with alleyways littered with trash.
There is a constant dynamic at play between serene beauty and the colour of extreme life. Witnessing the everyday struggle makes you feel somewhat embarrassed for all that you have, and most significantly gives important perspective as to your extremely privileged place in this world.
I was my son’s age when I first visited India; I hope the lasting impression that it made on me all those years ago is the same for him. It is truly unforgettable.

The City Palace Atelier in Jaipur. Jaipur is full of colour, but this small shop of delight takes it to a whole new level. The ‘black and white’ had to take a back seat for this. They had to drag me out of there, camera clicking! Just magic. 🩵💙🧡💚💛🩷

The Taj Mahal in Agra has been on my list for as long as I can remember… and it is truly just as magical in real life as I ever imagined. Seeing a monument such as this in person is actually rather weird - as though seeing a sort of dream (as I’d imagine it would be like to meet David Beckham).

Agra isn’t the easiest of places to get to. We flew into Delhi and embarked on a two hour train ride to get there - and let me tell you, if you want to experience India - just get dropped off at the Delhi Railway station (at the wrong entrance) and attempt to navigate the throng of people while making sure your 12 year old doesn’t get run over by a tuk-tuk.

It’s an experience. India is an experience. The amount of life going on every moment you step outside is both overwhelming and thrilling. Comfort zone, what comfort zone?!

The last time I travelled like this was in 2003 when I went backpacking for 6 months. Nowadays it seems almost impossible to think that my only guide was a dog-eared Lonely Planet guide for each country visited. Internet cafes were used once per week just to send a quick email home to indicate proof of life. No google maps and a calling card for emergencies were it - and it all worked out.

This time, while decent hotels replace hostels, the spirit remains the same. Onward. We have a ways to go. ⏩

PS - Please God let England win the World Cup.

I’m pretty flippin’ excited to announce that my brand-new collection of 4x6 postcards is officially hitting the shelves this week.
