ZANJ Foto Presents! 💛✨

🚨STRIP SEARCH🚨

At the beginning of the pandemic, I noticed a lot of black humans expressing their concerns and fears behind wearing a mask. Black bodies are already heavily monitored in the most basic settings. Despite my frustration, I understand why many people of color, especially black people, have fear surrounding face coverings being “mistaken” for having any purpose other than preserving one’s health. We also have to factor in weather & underlying health conditions that may cause one to layer up more than usual, making one’s body more bulky and unrecognizable or “suspicious”.

With that being said, I myself am a person who is somewhat OCD, or shall I say “perfectionist”, surrounding matters of my health & my families health. The urgency and extreme panic surrounding this health crisis left me no room to be careless. Not only was I wearing the proper equipment like masks and gloves, I was adding layers on top of that to be both thorough and warm since it was the tail end of winter, into spring. My process for this shoot was a bit “spur of the moment”. I had just finished grocery shopping and without a second thought, before removing any of my clothing, I walked to my selected shoot space, and took snapshots of me stripping away what was at the time my “COVID Uniform”. The goal was to imitate a road-side strip search or a strip search in general. Unfortunately, so many black bodies have been snatched, kidnapped, & murdered before their time, for reasons that aren’t justified, and in this case with the current subject, the cycle continued.

Zanj FOTO Presents 💛✨

🔒 LOC-ed 🔒

This piece is inspired by DeAndre Arnold who was told he has to cut his locs in order to walk at graduation at his school, Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. He also received in-school suspension for that time of “rebellion”.

My goal was to channel ‘imprisonment’; a feeling of being trapped by one’s hair, or more specifically, the restrictions placed on one’s hair which bleeds into the restrictions placed on one’s body as a whole, black bodies.
