Stanley the Black-Necked Stilt has a flair for the dramatic when doing distraction dances to entice attention away from the family nest. This year he's performing select arias from his favorite opera "The Marriage of Figaro".

Juvenile Harris's Hawks who aren't quite ready to fledge yet branching above their nest. Branching is the stage when the youngsters jump or hop to nearby branches (or saguaro arms) around the nest. This pair of siblings are having a tricky balancing act sharing their perch at the top of the saguaro.

A bobcat huntress patiently scanning for her favorite prey, rats. Bobcats are strictly carnivorous and typically eat 1-2 pounds of meat a day. Their food primarily comes by stealthily stalking and catching small prey such as rats, rabbits, squirrels, and birds.

Desert Bighorn Sheep visit the shoreline of Canyon Lake for a refreshing drink of cool water. The frequency that a Desert Bighorn needs to drink varies with the season. During summer heat, they will need to visit a water source to drink daily. During cooler winter months or in years with plentiful rain, a bighorn may get enough hydration from food sources or small water seeps that they may only need to visit a larger water source once every few weeks.

He says, "For you, I'd walk on water 20 times a day."

Western Grebes are famed for their highly synchronized elaborately elegant mating dances. The dance culminates with a Rushing Ceremony where the pair "walks on water" running side by side.

Owlbert and Owlicia decided to join the Neighborhood Watch. The Watch signs clearly indicated watching was done with one eye only. Being rule followers, they were doing their best to comply.

A pair of Gila woodpeckers nesting in a saguaro is one of the iconic sights in Sonoran Desert springtime. But what's this European starling doing hanging around?

Not so fun fact, starlings and Gila woodpeckers are mortal enemies. Starlings will steal nests from woodpeckers and are known to destroy eggs, kill chicks, and in some cases fight to the death to take over a nest cavity. I've seen this woodpecker pair nesting in this same cavity year after year despite being in the middle of a flock of starlings, so they are wise to the ways of their neighbors. I hope their success continues.

I think that owlet is checking me out... I should have done something better with my hair. ;)

It turns out an owl's eyes are in a fixed position. They don't move the way ours do. All that head bobbing and weaving helps owls gather visual information and improves their depth perception which is especially important later when they start hunting. If you see an owl doing this, they are indeed "checking you out".
